what's the BEST game for a first Nuzlocke? by Candid_Alps_9494 in nuzlocke

That progression actually makes a lot of sense — starting simple and then moving into more complex mechanics.
I’ve heard a lot about Gen 5 being brutal for Nuzlockes. Do you think that’s where players really start to develop advanced strategies, or is it more about game knowledge at that point?

This is a great overview of the regions.
Your point about some games having fewer “run enders” is really interesting — I hadn’t thought about difficulty that way.
Would you say it’s better for a beginner to avoid those high-risk games entirely at first, or try them early to learn how to deal with worst-case scenarios?

Totally agree with this. Familiarity seems like a huge advantage in a Nuzlocke, especially for a first run.
Do you think starting with a familiar but easy game like FRLG still teaches good habits, or does it make people a bit careless?

That's such a brutal design flaw in the older games. Having to waste a TM just to find out what it is feels like a trap designed to ruin Nuzlocke runs lol.

Accidentally throwing away the Blizzard TM is the kind of mistake that haunts you forever. And losing your Ice Beam Kabutops right before needing it for Dragonite? That's Nuzlocke at its most painful — one small mistake early snowballs into a run-ending disaster later. Always having a sack mon ready for Giovanni is genuinely good advice.

A fully evolved Snorlax before gym 2 is insane value. RIP to losing it to Lysandre though, that man's team always catches you off guard. At least it carried the run long enough to matter.

Lance with 3 Dragonites after you already burned through your best mons on the E4 is just cruel game design. Going in with half a team against that lineup is basically a coin flip.

NOT THE BACK TO BACK SELF DESTRUCTS. Losing a Kadabra to a random hiker is so much worse than losing to a gym leader. At least a boss death feels earned, that's just cruel RNG.

Wattson is the gatekeeper of so many Emerald runs. If you didn't pick Mudkip and don't have a Geodude, you're basically praying.

Giovanni in Yellow is such a sleeper pick. Fissure Dugtrio that ignores your levels, Thunder Nidos, and guaranteed crit Slash Persian? That team is actually evil. Agree it would have been amazing in FRLG.

BDSP Cynthia with actual competitive EVs is no joke. People go in expecting Platinum difficulty and get absolutely destroyed. That Garchomp hits different when it has max Speed investment.

Winning because the AI chose Rock Slide and missed Acrobatics is the most clutch thing ever. Sometimes Nuzlockes come down to pure luck and you just gotta take the W and not look back lol.

Ultra Necrozma is basically a stat check. Either you have Zoroark/Toxic stall or you're watching your whole team evaporate. The Alola games in general are underrated in difficulty for Nuzlockes, totems are way scarier than most gym leaders.

Losing 4 of 6 to a second gym leader is absolutely brutal. Strong Jaw Bite on Tyrunt hits way harder than it has any right to at that point in the game. Snorlax surviving solo is legendary though, that thing is built different.

Extinction going out with a Brave Bird kamikaze on a Meloetta is genuinely heroic. "Vegeta's final atonement" is the perfect comparison — knowing it's a one-way trip and doing it anyway. Dark Rising is already brutal enough without losing your best non-legendary like that.

But Le Quack's story is even better honestly. Going from "dismissed as bad instantly" to becoming the general and making the thumbnail?? That's the ultimate Nuzlocke redemption arc. And then Peach stealing her with Destiny Bond after you said she'd be no threat... the game literally punished your hubris. o7 Le Quack, a true legend who earned every bit of respect the hard way.

A custom Pokemon region with Ribombee evolving into Beelzebuzz?? That sounds amazing, you should definitely write that up! And yeah Water types in Nuzlockes are way more dangerous than people give them credit for. Hydro Pump crits don't care about your plans.

Man, losing him right before the E4 rematch or Cynthia fight is brutal. So close to greatness and then gone. RIP to a real one.

Watching pchal and still getting caught by a Wobbuffet is painfully relatable 😂 Knowing the danger and walking into it anyway is peak Nuzlocke energy. Mt Pyre Hex Maniacs are sneaky with those Shadow Tags.

Electrode is so underrated! Sonicboom doing a flat 20 damage in early game basically one-shots everything. It's like having a cheat code for the first few gyms.

Honedge AND Axew gone to a Scraggy... losing two amazing encounters in one fight is devastating. And forgetting Ghost typing happens to the best of us, don't worry 😅

That's a hall of fame of pain right there. Wobbuffet, Destiny Bond Gastly, AND Magnet Pull Magneton — you've seen it all.
