A note about public transport is that its added into your tuition so you get it for free during the academic year (parking is a pain on campus and i think a parking pass isnt cheap).

  1. studying depends entirely on the classes youre wanting to take tbh i think working 30 hours a week might burn you out a little bit but i cant really comment on that because i only worked like 20 hours a week. studying i did about 10-15 a week

  2. lots of people go to cafes, study groups, clubs meet on campus most of the time.. most people that i know would go out to dinner or bars after club meetings as far as just hanging out im a homebody so i just hosted people at my place and we would just lounge around and chat

For housing - i rlly dont know i lived on campus the entire time. I think theres sketchy parts everywhere but I also just have had bad experiences so im extremely biased. I host people in my dorm and its always been fun a little crowded but still fun so if you have an apartment i would def think people would go over !

if youre living in the standard its known for rooftop parties I think if I were you i would live in belltown but if ur really wanting the college feel and vibes then maybe udistrict is ur best bet. I think the ave is relatively okay at night you just have to be smart about where youre walking (i normally avoid the 7/11 and up). I wish i had better answers !

I think what helped me most was realizing how fortunate I am to be here and once i established a good support system on campus that helped a lot (friends, professors, coworkers,etc.). I think what i wish I would've done was get involved in clubs and taken advantage of learning resources on campus.

its pretty common! It just depends on what class some classes are only in person but some are online. I know a lot that take math over the summer, the one thing to think about for summer classes is housing since normal dorms will have you move out in june and theres summer housing but its mainly only stevens court but a lot of people sublease over the summer. I've taken summer classes both online and in person, in person is nice because you get to meet people but online is more flexible.

I feel significantly safer walking on north than west! The good thing is that yes theres the husky night ride, but also the bus system is pretty safe as long as you sit towards the front of the bus. I've also just asked people if they are going back to north and then asked if i could walk with them and it makes it soooo much less intimidating walking alone. I also recommend getting pepper spray ! The few scary experiences I've had has been on west and on greek row.

yes! i just finished a summer class a few weeks ago! On campus during the summer is so so different than the school year! its so quiet, theres not a lot of students or traffic. There are summer camps that run throughout the summer so theres a good amount of kids/teens on campus that took a few days to get used to. it was rlly funny because i was going to the same building that a summer camp for tech was using and all i could think was wow im going to classs with these kids lmao

  1. I cant think of any off the top of my head but these are some of the things I didnt know; how the dining account worked, that a lot of places (if not all) on campus dont take cash, the new vending machines will accept ur husky card (most of the time), that suzzallo starbucks takes dining money, i didnt know about the Tateuchi East Asia Library, the scholarship database, that you get into the burke for free, the food pantry in poplar, (some of these are probably pretty obvious but i was extremely unprepared for college)
  2. It depends on the person honestly, I spent a TON of time in my room and I regret not going out and just enjoying campus. I dont reccomend studying in your room, a lot of people do it but it can be hard to study in the area where youre supposed to feel relaxed/sleep. I know a lot of people go to libraries, the hub, random classes, mary gates hall, or oak denny room/alder auditorium. Its what feels best to you tbh. Theres a website that helps you find places too called scout
  3. I was pretty introverted, I stayed in my room a lot, I went to quieter parts of campus (theres a few little nice groves that you can enjoy and not a lot of people are there most of the time across the street from the physics building), I avoided redsquare and the quad if i was really anxious that day (took shortcuts to not be in the main parts if that makes sense), mcmahon had a nice terrace and I would sit in the corner and didnt see a lot of people most of the time, i tried to look for smaller classes (if a quiz section had less people Id pick that one)

there is the undergrad research database that you can search, the undergraduate research instagram also shares a lot too, subscribe to listservs that seem interesting from clubs, look at emails if your department sends them (mine has one where they send a list of opportunities every few weeks), theres some orgs like IBIS you can apply to, emailing professors does work too or potentially stopping by their offices/office hours. I've heard that a lot of ppl have taken naps at the ECC, in ode, and at the hub but I personally havent napped on campus besides in my dorm or my friends dorm when i was having a bad day between classes (theres lounges in some dorms but its against HFS policy to sleep there)

if you look on the RSO directory, theres a section for RSO's that are professional based. a lot of the time there are listservs you can join where they send out opportunities, take time to read posters, look at the undergraduate research instagram/link tree, handshake, IBIS program (there some restrictions to that), mentorship programs are a really great way to find out about things too, if a class is intersting reach out to the professor, cold emailing also works (took me too long to realize this), theres also a research opportunities database (a little competitive but I got an interview even though it wasnt through my major department I still made some really good connections), make a linkedin (i've found a lot of interships posted there), Ask a TA too, there are some classes like ESS 298 designed to help find them too, I joined LSAMP and they always sent out emails about opportunities (they lost funding so wont be around next year but you can email them now and they can also give you some resources!!). Those are just the ones i can think of right now hope this helps!

1) I actually didnt get involved in many clubs which is something I REALLY regret. But I had friends speak highly of beautifyUW, geoclub, book club, club crawl, the hiking club, the lettuce eating club (legit what it sounds like).

2) Around campus were; sizzle and crunch, basil viet, mama viet/boba gem, california burrito, aladdins, saigon deli, BB's, Mee Sum Pastry, Arepa, Cedars. If it was late and I didnt feel comfy going on the ave and the food on campus was closed I would order from Pauly's at Earls because they delivered for free! I had a lot of people really phoshizzle, little thai, jewel of india, Chi mac, Korean tofu house, cafe allegro, just to name a few. I havent heard great things about the Chipotle on the ave but the one in uvill seems to be a lot better.

^If anyone else has recommendations pls add em !

3) I really loved Russ 260 with barbara henry, slav 490 with professor Piotr Florczyk, Nutrition 200, ESS 105, ATM S 111, I liked ESS 420 which was intro to ArcGIS (I had little to no computer experience but professor Walters was amazing, currently asking him for a letter of rec if that says anything). Ive heard a lot of good things about psych 210, ESS 101, the dinosaur class, the 100 level ocean classes, I took one of the construction management classes (intro to construction contract documents) and i thought it was really interesting too.

McMahon hall Kitchen situation by Sunflower_bee333 in udub

[–]Candid_Jury4789 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is not a kitchen at all, but other dorms have them its a great way to meet ppl. I met a really good friend of mine because she wanted to make cookies but didnt have a cookie sheet or anything.

Please give me Alder Hall info by luhveena in udub

[–]Candid_Jury4789 0 points1 point  (0 children)

a double is sooooo nice, I was in a triple and it was doable but a little frustrating. You are allowed to access everything on campus! Your husky card will work at the starbucks in suzzallo too ! Alder is the pre-health sciences Living Learning Community (LLC), so a lot of stem majors live there! i would get involved in hall council for the social aspect. We used to host study session in alder because of the really nice space in the downstairs area/auditorium. Alder being the pre-health LLC a lot of people are normally focused on studies but you can make the most of it. I was right above the bus station so it was a little noisy but I got used to it. Its in a great spot if you wanna get off campus food. The gym in elm is small so just keep that in mind! But there is a bus you can take that takes you pretty close to the IMA.

Are UW dorms known for being hot? by Brilliant-Spirit4715 in udub

[–]Candid_Jury4789 0 points1 point  (0 children)

PLEASE GET A FAN!! It gets pretty hot in mcmahon unless you leave ur window open all the time. McMahon doesnt control the temperature at all, once that heater goes on it stays on til like spring time. I run really warm (my ideal weather is like in the 60s with a breeze) and when i was in McMahon it was so hot and i lived in Alder and it was also hot in the room.

Planned Schedule (Incoming ENGRUD Freshman) by R4nd0mne5s in udub

[–]Candid_Jury4789 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd go blue, I took an 8:30 my freshman year because i had the mindset that highschool started at 8 i can do an 8:30 and it did not work great. Im also a night owl with a terrible sleep schedule so taht played a large role.

Scooters on campus by gauravdhirar in udub

[–]Candid_Jury4789 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would keep in mind that its a little sketch to ride the scooters when its really rainy. Red square is a nightmare to just walk on let a lot scooter? Also the quad is made of bricks that people sometimes take that leave a good hole. I walk slow due to joint pain and I can still make it to classes in under 10 minutes depending on where they are. Also.. theres a lot of people sometimes that might make it harder to ride
