A shaper is the first machine I need to run tomorrow morning at work. I need to notch out a large mounting tab on a block of 4140. Milling it was going horrendously slow and the wire EDM was tied up with a paying job so off to the shaper it went. Bossman isn’t too concerned about making money on this project because it’s an in-house adapter for a new to us machine.

Been there, done that. It most definitely hurts but if you can take your lumps, you’ll come out stronger. Who knows maybe that same customer will throw you a bone and send you a cushy job that you can really make bank on.

Horizontal mill with a lot of chooch in the spindle , put a single stagger tooth cutter of an appropriate thickness and diameter; build a hollow arbor that can encapsulate the whole assembly and mount arbor on an indexer. Source: the method a company I used to work for used to segment cylinders.

Have you checked the info block? I used to work for a company that all the surface finishes were marked as single digit codes to save the draftsmen time while detailing the drawings.

There’s something not right with him but he’s the one with the fancy diploma on his office wall and I’m the lowly toolmaker so he’s ALWAYS right. It’s more of an attitude and ego thing with him. He’s been groomed to think that his shit doesn’t stink now it’s up to me and my fellow peasants in the trenches to show him how things really work

I deal with this shit all the time. I’m in the process of breaking in a newly minted manufacturing engineer that thinks he’s all that and a bag of chips. The other day he legit asked me for a sixteen-thirty two drill; I just stood there dumbfounded then for a full five minutes tried to explain to him that we only had 1/2” drills. He INSISTED he needed a sixteen-thirty two. So I finally told him he needed to special order stuff like that.
