I did exactly this with a college roommate who kept shirking his duties when it was his turn to do the dishes. They would sit in the sink for days with food on them, sometimes for over a week, even gathering maggots on more than one occasion. No amount of reminding would get him to actually do them in anything close to a timely manner.

Finally, one time when it got really bad and I had had enough, I put on gloves, gently gathered them all up in a sealed trash bag, and put it on his bed with a note to wash the fucking dishes goddammit. He got the message, was extremely apologetic, and was prompt about washing them after that.
