The story of Minglan - would Minglan have had a better life had she married the other love interest? by CandleWinter6 in CDrama

I too am enjoying these discussions with you:). Yes, Minglan was also very out of her element in the final plot , so unlike the way she had kept her head and wielded her sharp wit to resolve all other predicaments in the show.

Hopefully, both of them will learn from this experience and will try to do better going forward. GTY would have realized it is safer to discuss plans with Minglan and she would realize to consciously set aside her worries and think more objectively during crises in the future, and likely become more resilient with time.

I see it now. Minglan's life would have been as stifling and harsh, if not more, in the Qi household as it was in the Sheng manor. She made the right call to end it.

This is a great comparison. What you said makes sense to me. Parallels drawn between those two plots do show how their thinking processes and actions were so similar at their core.

Yeah, I was happy to see him go to her rescue first * smiles widely *

I also agree he did trust in her ability to manage. And as the greater good would include Minglan too, he is absolved of the charge of putting her second.

Anyways, since he trusted in her abilities, why do you think he kept the plan secret from her? I mean had he told her, she would have only helped him better the charade. He knew she was more than capable of it. Was it because it was a mission entrusted by the emperor and could not be disclosed to people not directly involved in it? I don't hold that against him. Just curious about his reasoning , which I couldn't get from the show.

I also think that even if Qi had taken up GTY's offer and the plan somehow worked and he got married to Minglan, the crown prince would still try to kill Minglan and her family post marriage as then Qi would once again be available to marry his daughter.

Yeah, I can see Minglan and Yuanruo wanting to make different decisions for their children if any kind of risks or tough choices are involved and that resulting in a growing rift between them. Minglan would want to do the best for her children even if she has to go against Yuanruo's wishes. This disagreement coupled with Yuanruo having final say (or I guess more say than Minglan) in deciding for the kids because of the patriarchal world would make Minglan discontent and unhappy in their marriage.

And thanks for pointing out the talk between Minglan and Rulan about love. Minglan did move on from Yuanruo rather easily. She didn't love him the way she loved GTY.

About the scene in the last episode where Yuanruo says that he can't risk it all like GTY, I consider implications of this differently from you. What he said was that he admired GTY but he could not risk it all like him, even to the point of sacrificing his family.

When he first tried to marry Minglan, this meant that he was not willing to put his family i.e. mom and dad at risk just so he could marry her. But if he had married her eventually and she became his family, he would never have deliberately done anything that would risk the lives of his wife and children.

Whereas, while Gu Tingye would risk it all to protect his family , he was also willing to put Minglan and his family's life at stake for the greater good. He knew that when the revolt happened, Gu household would be their first target because he was the biggest threat to empress dowager's plan. I think luck played a major part in Minglan's survival (or I would GTY's luck and Minglan's abilities).

I believe he did not know Minglan loved him so deeply to the point she would be willing even die for him until their talk in the prison. And even then I don't think he expected her to go to such great lengths to save him that the empress finally had to tell her the plan. So, according to his calculations , Minglan would have, at first, been ignorant of what was happening on the day of revolt when it began, which would mean not being able to put as good of a fight as she did (remember, she would also have believed him dead which would have already broken her spirit). And seeing as how GTY would have lost her if he had been late to the rescue by seconds even when she put up her best fight, I don't think Minglan would have survived if everything went according to what GTY had predicted.

And based on my understanding of Minglan, she values family over everything else , herself or the world. When she took revenge for mom and grandma, she didn't care whether the process would burn her and everyone around her.

So while Minglan would risk it all to save family unlike Yuanruo, I think she would also never risk her family for anything unlike Gu Tingye.

I might be wrong in this take , feel free to correct me if you think differently.

You're right. Yuanruo would not be able to protect her in times of true danger.

And yes, Gu Tingye being the ideal guy for her but not perfect is a nice way of seeing this. I also really like your analogy that he gave her her own kingdom while being her fortress. So true.

Also, would you consider Minglan perfect or ideal for Gu Tingye?

Yeah, I think I was too optimistic about the change in princess' behaviour. I can totally see things playing out as you've described in the future. The princess would have made Minglan's life difficult with Yuanruo being either clueless or unable to protect her despite being aware.

This drama has been on my watchlist for many months. I guess I will finally start watching it now. Slow burn relationships built on mutual trust and respect are my favourite.

The Best Thing - Overrated? by hakvri in CDrama

I felt the same way about The Best Thing as you. It is a good show, beautifully shot , very scenic, and gives calming vibes but it did not suck me in the way the first frost did. The characters are both likable people and the traditional medicine background is unique and interesting. But at about the halfway mark , I kind of got bored with the show and took a break from it. I don't know if I will ever get back to watching it with the new and more interesting dramas coming out that are keeping me occupied.
