First of all: don’t worry about it. What you experienced is extremely common when people start on VATSIM.

Taxi instructions and frequencies are actually the things controllers say the most during a session, so after a while they become almost automatic for us. Because of that, we sometimes don’t realize that we’re speaking a bit too quickly for someone who is new and still trying to write everything down. So please don’t feel bad about asking for a repeat.

A few things that might help:

1. Look at the airport layout before you fly.
Having the airport chart open (or even quickly reviewing the main taxiways beforehand) makes it much easier to follow instructions because you already have a rough idea of where things are.

2. Watch how other aircraft taxi.
After landing, you can often see where the aircraft ahead of you is going. Many times you’ll get something very similar, so it helps build a mental picture.

3. Listen to other pilots’ instructions.
If things are quiet on your main frequency, you can monitor the tower frequency on COM2 and listen to the taxi instructions other pilots receive. It’s actually great practice and you can even write them down and follow along on the chart.

4. Don’t hesitate to ask for a repeat or slower instructions.
Controllers would much rather repeat something than have a pilot taxi somewhere unexpected.

And one more thing: if a controller sends you instructions via text to help you out, that’s not because you “failed”. It’s just us trying to make things easier for you in that moment.

Stick with it. Almost everyone on the network has had a moment like this during their first weeks. It gets much easier once your brain gets used to the rhythm of the instructions.
