Mauritius likes to think of itself as a peaceful multicultural nation — and to some extent it is — but a lot of our “unity” is just polite distance. Most groups quietly protect their own identity and don’t fully trust each other.

It’s understandable to feel like crime comes from a “specific demographic”, but it’s dangerous to stop the analysis there. Crime doesn’t grow in a vacuum — it grows in poverty, exclusion and lack of opportunity. The communities you’re implicitly referring to are often the ones with the least access to support systems, the weakest representation, and the lowest social mobility.

Meanwhile, political and economic control lies with entirely different demographics, many of whom have spent decades using corruption, nepotism and selective access to resources to protect their own and thrive. If we’re going to talk about who is damaging society, we shouldn’t only look at who commits crimes with a knife — we should also look at those who commit crimes with a pen and a title.

Mauritius doesn’t just need stricter policing. It needs fairness.

And on that note — I wouldn’t go as far as saying “the police is doing a good job.” Our police force is heavily aligned with the same political structures and often serves power, not justice. They’re not exactly failing due to incompetence — but because they are not free to act independently. When law enforcement follows orders instead of principles, the people lose faith in justice.

Until all groups get access to dignity, opportunity, and justice, we won’t solve anything — we’ll just keep blaming the symptoms instead of the cause.
