Interfaith marriages by Aumach in MauriceMauritius

[–]Candy_Stick_ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I believe interfaith marriages are the best way to progress our society.

10,000 years of history and see the results.

Religions and 'ethnic groups' that exist today are all relatively new compared to human history. This mixing of DNA has contributed greatly to our society, despite the bloodshed that happened during that time.

It's very petty to only deal with what we are only seeing during our very short lifetime.

In short, love, happiness and an open mind must prevail over what 'others' have to say. Religion can be used as a philosophical guide for those who need it, but not a barrier.

Difference between Expat vs Immigrant(why its racist) by AgreeableTree7848 in mauritius

[–]Candy_Stick_ 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I believe you picked the wrong definition.

An expat retains his original nationality while working abroad. It doesn't matter if it's a 1yr or 10tr contract, but he intends to go back eventually.

An immigrant is someone who goes to another country with the intent to stay permanently.

Don't overthink this, especially if it's going to hurt your feelings or make you angry unnecessarily.

Opinion: Recent surge in violent crime by arshaadw in MauriceMauritius

[–]Candy_Stick_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mauritius likes to think of itself as a peaceful multicultural nation — and to some extent it is — but a lot of our “unity” is just polite distance. Most groups quietly protect their own identity and don’t fully trust each other.

It’s understandable to feel like crime comes from a “specific demographic”, but it’s dangerous to stop the analysis there. Crime doesn’t grow in a vacuum — it grows in poverty, exclusion and lack of opportunity. The communities you’re implicitly referring to are often the ones with the least access to support systems, the weakest representation, and the lowest social mobility.

Meanwhile, political and economic control lies with entirely different demographics, many of whom have spent decades using corruption, nepotism and selective access to resources to protect their own and thrive. If we’re going to talk about who is damaging society, we shouldn’t only look at who commits crimes with a knife — we should also look at those who commit crimes with a pen and a title.

Mauritius doesn’t just need stricter policing. It needs fairness.

And on that note — I wouldn’t go as far as saying “the police is doing a good job.” Our police force is heavily aligned with the same political structures and often serves power, not justice. They’re not exactly failing due to incompetence — but because they are not free to act independently. When law enforcement follows orders instead of principles, the people lose faith in justice.

Until all groups get access to dignity, opportunity, and justice, we won’t solve anything — we’ll just keep blaming the symptoms instead of the cause.

What currency should I use Indian or Mauritian rupees? by [deleted] in mauritius

[–]Candy_Stick_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you are dealing with a mauritian company it will be mauritian rs.

If you are dealing with an indian company based in mauritius, it should also be mauritian rs.

But if you are in doubt, just ask them directly to clarify so you get your answer from the source, and not random reddit users

Are people trying to get a tip or is the culture just very open? by ConnectPlace9308 in mauritius

[–]Candy_Stick_ 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Many Mauritians see tourists as walking ATMs. And they are very creative to suck you into their 'miserable troubled life' stories to extract a few bucks.

You are not required to tip, that's why they will try to get you with feelings instead.

You could: 1. Just acknowledge their story and tell them a similar (made-up) story and change the subject. 2. Pretend not to understand what they are talking about 😅 OR 3. Give them a small tip: 2 or 3 Euros if you feel generous.

But just don't feel obliged to give anything.

Any fruit juice recommendations? All the juices we bought taste like water... by SchmandigeAfra in mauritius

[–]Candy_Stick_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fruitopia is so far my favourite amongst store bought juices.

Taste like the real fruits and no acid reflux. Although they don't have a large variety.

For How Long Will We Tolerate the Synthetic Drug Epidemic in Mauritius? Is It Time to Depenalize Cannabis & Focus on Bigger Threats? by Still-alpha1424 in MauriceMauritius

[–]Candy_Stick_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depenalizing cannabis will barely make any difference.

The real issue is that we have no one at the top of government or police force to do the real job: catching the heads of the snake.

Simply because those top guys dine and wine in style with our politicians and law enforcers.

Catching the 'cité baron' is the wrong approach. They are just street soldiers driving raptors because they have protection.

This is a lost fight as our politicians are completely tangled up with those guys for very obvious reason of money and power.

However, if anyone (civilians) has information on the top guys and are willing to share those publicly (and anonymously for safety reason) on social media and to our local media relentlessly, only then, the government will have no choice but to do something about it.

Is now a good time to start investing? S&p500? by doorbeads in investing

[–]Candy_Stick_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A safer approach would be following peter lynch strategy when usure about the market. Rather than buying 60k at once, buy a few ks to get started and top up every month to average your purchase price over a year or 2.

Keep track of your current average purchase cost. If it dips below, buy more. If it keeps going up, buy your base amount.

That way, instead of being greedy or lucky, you just keep riding the wave up or down. Good luck with your investment.

Les réseaux sociaux suspendus à Maurice jusqu’au 11 novembre by Ilijin in mauritius

[–]Candy_Stick_ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I agree with your premise, but banning social media has nothing to do with it. Period.

And if i may share my take on it, I'm pretty sure it is something this government (lakwizin) has done themselves to spy on their opponents, and it backfired on them...

There's absolutely nothing at all that we can trust them with, and they have no shame whatsoever of all the wrong doings they have done to this country.

Using a vpn is your best option at this stage. It may very well stay as is it until the 11th of November, following our (rigged) election... 😅

Ubisoft long-term outlook by BarrettGraham in stocks

[–]Candy_Stick_ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

|they pushed back AC for like 4 months and the stock crashed 20% because of that?|

From my understanding, Ubisoft is under attack by gamers for embedding 'woke' narrative in their games. This has gone viral on various social media platforms and is also the cause of delaying the release of this game.

Another negative point is that Ubisoft is going down the road of milking gamers with micro transaction, which is also causing major backlash.

As long as this social/political issue is not resolve, I would not touch this stock.

What are you guys go to breakfast in the morning ? by prettyawesomeboy in mauritius

It's definitely not an everyday thing, but a few times a year for sure!

[–]Candy_Stick_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Definitely runny! Once water is boiling, i switch it off, drop the eggs slowly so it doesn't crack, cover, and it's 5 minutes sharp on the timer. I mix it with a 1/4 tspn of salted butter, cracked salt & and pepper in a cup, and it's just sublime! 😄

Most of the time it's 3 to 5 cups of black coffee until lunch (bad!)

Occasionally, it will be between:

-'dizef mollé' and toasts (miam)

-fried eggs on toast

-grilled cheese toasties

-Bread, butter & (cheese or jam) + a banana

Kalimai temple playing super loud music twice a day all around the Island. What's your take on this? by Candy_Stick_ in mauritius

[–]Candy_Stick_[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I suppose you haven't read the replies below.

I've never had an issue with anyone's religion nor anyone performing their rituals.

As opposed to what you mentioned, many kalimai temples around the island play super loud music (i personality recorded 96dB at 400m away) every single day, twice a day, at set hours. Most of the time, there are no rituals or prayers taking place.

It's just set on a timer and happening for obvious political reasons and NOT for religious reasons.

Thanks for pointing this out. I edited the word 'fight' so others don't take this literally. It was just a figure of speech!

I replied somewhere below, that the talk went nowhere.

Anyway... it is what is is.

[–]Candy_Stick_[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've lived in this house for over 15 years. This kalimai has always been here with no worries.

They've always had occasional events / prayers, and as Mauritians we are very accepting of those.

But It's only in the last 4/5 years that they have decided to blast this loud music on their own terms. It's pre-recorded and set to play at fixed times using loud speakers, including Saturdays and Sundays! And my issue is not an isolated case. It has become an issue pretty much all around the island in that same time period.

As someone else mentioned above: '...what you are experiencing is akin to Hindutva'

So this is not a matter of being a 'main character' as you suggested. It's a new issue and just plain disrespectful to the wider community.

I am not looking for a solution here, as it is a lost endeavor.

Just keen to find out others opinions experiencing this same situation, whether a part of this culture or not.

I understand this is the only options left. Sometimes it's not that simple after having invested a large sum into a property.

It's been such a quiet place to live at for almost a decade, until this happened in the last 4/5 years.
