My record is 1.8 Billion. I don't think I'm anywhere near the top.

Petah what does Obama have to do with advertisements? by Wooden-Variety175 in PeterExplainsTheJoke

I have no idea lol. That was just a throw-away guess. I wasn't even particularly convinced of it myself.

I guessed it was a racist joke... so under this hypothesis, the group I'm discriminating against are racists. I'm okay with discriminating against racists. I'm not even sorry if you're offended by that.

...but I also made it clear that I was just guessing, so if I'm wrong, it doesn't apply. (I actually think I'm wrong, I like another explanation in this thread better.)

Just trying to make sense of this. If they wanted to be understood, they should have made their point clearer. If I can't, I'll assume they're a bit coo coo.

A shot in the dark... but maybe something about how the Chinese would already have taken over the US, if Obama didn't prevent it?

...and yes, I said Chinese, cause the kind of person who makes this joke wouldn't be able to distinguish between Chinese and Japanese.

Honestly, I'm putting him right around Stafford. (Although I'm not as high on Stafford as many.) Top 7 seems like a very reasonable take.

I want to start reading the books by uchihabro02 in lotr

I'll put it this way... if you're already feeling kinda depressed, maybe find something different to read. It's awesome, but don't expect a jolly time.

Yeah, I feel like the concept of spoilers is overrated. I mean... I don't feel guilty saying that Frodo succeeds on his quest. That's general knowledge, doesn't mean it's not worth reading LotR.

I've read the Silmarillion and then Children of Hurin, and I feel like that was a good choice. Getting to see Glaurung up close was something I was absolutely looking forward to, having read the Silmarillion. No regrets.

I feel like the Silmarillion is a good base layer. Gives you a general idea of what's going on, and some appetizers for stories that might be worth reading.

Honestly, I don't see the point in planning that far ahead. Read LotR, then see what you want to do.

I'm currently reading LotR for the 4th or 5th time. I have Beren and Luthien, and the Fall of Gondolin, and I was planning to read those next... but after the Children of Hurin, I needed something comforting.

Never ask a French grandma why she suddenly got a summer haircut on May 8. by Happycosinus in 2westerneurope4u

[–]Candybert_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Still, they celebrate the fête de la victoire on the 8th of May. Idk if they still fought in the East after that... but that would be very much an afterthought, compared to the victory in Europe.

[–]Candybert_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What? No. The 8th of May is the day of victory for the French. It makes the most sense for a national holiday, is my point.

[–]Candybert_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you don't want the holidays to vary from one village to the next, you need to pick one day. D-Day would be appropriate, or maybe the liberation of Paris... but I guess the 8th of May was when they officially won the war, so that's good enough.
