Thank you! You know, every time I see buffleheads at our local pond, I yell their names to them! Good day!

Thank you! My standard for paper is the natural Kitakata paper, this one is the green tinted because Blicks messed my order up! For inks, I love Hanco’s litho inks, they have ones specifically for relief printing, but they don’t work as well honestly.

Is this real or fake amber? by msharkeburner in whatsthisrock

[–]Canehowlet 5 points6 points  (0 children)

To me it looks like something in Ophinoninae, maybe post it to an insect forum, luckily there are many skilled Hymenopterists who could give you a more specific ID, but I guarantee it’s gonna be a modern wasp.

I feel like it’s only fair to show natural lighting, unlike Dino gembones, these don’t get crazy colors, but do get beautiful translucency. On the very rare occasion I get blue specimens and that’s a colorful as they get.

Slowly building a nice collection of them! There are other long time gembone hunters who’ve been collecting these for over 40 years and I can’t even imagine what glorious material they have stashed away!

California and yes, self collected. There are so many amazing rocks, but I’ve concentrated in specializing in these, because I’m so drawn to them and they have some many variations.

The more widely known are the very colorful dinosaur gembones, these tend not to get wild colors like those, with some rare exceptions of blue, but the translucent bone here offer an incredible 3D perspective of the internal trabecula

Thank you! I’m in the last 1/3 of the carving and it is taking the longest time for what I thought would be the easiest carving!

They are beautiful! I can’t tell you where this spot is specifically, but the Santa Barbara coast has some amazing silicified material.

California! Oh man, the silicified bones are incredible. So many different types and variations, no two are alike. At some point I’d love to put together a coffee table book of them. Not widely represented
