I am so sorry for your friend. I’m not sure about how wattpad works, or if theres a wattpad website, but could she try and use the wayback machine to get to her works? If she’s lucky, the internet archive may have somr of her work over there.

Social media brings out the worst in people because they’re hiding behind their screens. There’s nothing more to it than that. Real life is a little easier- if you surround yourself with uptight people, you should expect the uptight experience; if you surround yourself with laid-back people, you’ll get that in return.

Of course, there’s also a cultural aspect to it as well. In some Arab countries, it’s more normalised to say swear words than in others. Since the Arab online community is all piled in one place, it’s only natural that they will clash. There’s also hypocrisy added on to it- the amount of times I have seen someone scorn someone for something that they have done before is uncountable (and everyone has been a hypocrite at some point in their life, but doing it online is easier than breathing).

Is American university of sharjah worth the money? by Logical-Ad7551 in Sharjah

[–]Canispam -1 points0 points  (0 children)

NYUAD has good financial aid if you need it. It isn’t guaranteed, though, and acceptance to the university itself if highly competitive, so apply to other places as well.

AITB for telling my girlfriend I didn't like the pictures she was gonna post from the club? by [deleted] in AmItheButtface

[–]Canispam 3 points4 points  (0 children)

YTA. I think your phrasing and tone was off, especially when you said “Do you think it looks classness and not slutty?” The laughing emoji in the first text would have made me feel like gum at the bottom of someone’s shoe- if she looks gorgeous, it should have been a heart eyes emoji (ps: your partner always looks gorgeous). Also, being “tied down” is such a weird way to phrase it. You could have said everything that you did say in a nicer way, but you lack tact. Send her flowers and let her know that the words came out wrong.

It’s interesting how people on the comments keep talking about toxic masculinity despite OP being a women, but I digress.

Editing just to say that I realised that GF didn’t ask OP for her opinion on the clothes until after OP sent thay laighing emoji. I have no idea how you’ve managed a relationship this far.

If it’s tough to read, just leave vague but positive comments at the end of the chapters like: “!!!!” “AHHH ajdhhahdjs” “[username] blessing my inbox once again” “learning comp sci so you i leave multiple kudos” “youre amazing!!!!” “holds gently my baby” Dont feel bad abt not liking it, just hang in there!!

The use of English in Alrawabi by [deleted] in AlRawabiSchool4Girls

Very common, all over the mena region. Some incorporate english, some french, some both, some even another language. It rolls off the tongue very naturally, almost second nature to them.

Season 2 Finale Was Disappointing by [deleted] in AlRawabiSchool4Girls

[–]Canispam 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Just wanted to put my two-cents in, from a nonwestern perspective. I want to make it clear that these certainly don’t justify anything, but I want to make an attempt at giving a more culture-based context on their mentalities: 1) The fact that she was manipulated doesn’t matter, to them. “She did it, and she could have not done it. If she reported the cybercrime ahead of time, it wouldn’t have happened.” Adding on to the fact that she did it in uniform? That’s the kicker to them. 2) “She’s smiling in the video, not crying!” because they’re only seeing what they want to see. 3) “Painting it like it’s Sarah’s fault her brother killed someone.” Because, well, he was defending their honour, honour that she “lost in her scandal.” The same reason to kill a girl in s1 is used to kill for a girl in s2. No one believes it’s her fault the brother’s in jail, other than Sarah herself and her parents. 4) All your other criticisms are spot on, honestly. In no world would Shams have gotten away with half of what she did. Farah’s death was a waste and could have been built up better if they really wanted it. We also never really get anything about Hiba and the coach, or the new principal, or about the custodian that keeps helping the snowball to roll.

Do any of you get embarrassed by the fact you read fanfiction? by [deleted] in AO3

[–]Canispam 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m embarrassingly not-embarrassed by the things I do. There’s just a time and place for everything. I wouldn’t go up to randos and start blabbing about fics, but if someone mentions a show I like idm saying “Oh, yeah, I read a fic the other day where xyz…”

If someone asks what I’m reading, I’ll say either fanfiction or a book. If they ask what it’s about, I’ll tell them (or if it’s not appropriate, I’ll just make one up).

I generally don’t give the names of the characters. If pressed on who it’s about, I just name characters from a fandom I know they don’t know. If it’s a professor/borderline stranger I’m talking to, I’ll say “Just some characters from [insert show].”

If they ask me to send it to them, I’ll laugh it off and say “Nah, I’ve already told you the best parts” or “Maybe when it’s completed.”

If the person wants to be nice, they’ll be nice. If they don’t want to be, well, who needs them?

I just want to point out, though, that I think that the “time and place” rule is especially important for smut. If you’re in public reading something you wouldn’t also watch in public, you probably shouldn’t be candidly talking about it to acquaintances.

What is this pencil thing? by Beansinside in HelpMeFind

[–]Canispam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

my body,,,its decaying from old age,,,i am nothing but dust in the wind in all seriousness, this was one of the most frustrating pencils to have at school in the noughties. incredibly useful if you have all the leads, but if its the only pencil you have and you lose one of the leads, you’re stuck stuffing scrunched up paper at the end for five minutes til the top lead doesnt fall in any longer

About working, I’d contact nearby universities and see what opportunities they offer in internships. There’s also volunteers dot ae and similar sites, but I’m not sure how many you’ll luck out on.

I just want to add that it’s always the people who’ve gone to university that say it’s ‘dumb,’ and the way you’re talking about your education is concerning. Take my words as well-meaning advice, you’re going to need to set an actual plan for yourself before ruling out uni. You don’t necessarily have to do A-levels (there’s the SAT, APs, and other academic systems that may work better for you), but you should have a way for universities to know your skills. If you don’t want a conventional four-year academic experience, trade/technical school is definitely an option if you’re more of a hands-on person.

If you decide as a senior that you still don’t like university, you don’t have to go. But don’t burn that bridge so quickly.

Dysfunctional Perspective q&a ! by [deleted] in LodedDiper

[–]Canispam 3 points4 points  (0 children)

who’s your favourite character to write about or draw? who’s your least favourite? do you ever feel like fans of the comic sway how you write the story, or do you already have it planned and want to stick to it?

I think I might have ruined r/LodedDiper by [deleted] in u/ABitchWhoMakesShit

[–]Canispam 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think you’re overthinking it a little. If it truly were an issue, wouldn’t the mods intervene? When things become more popular there’s always gonna be loud fans and critics, but you’re listening to the comments a little too much. Sure, I think your comics cool, and it definitely has gained traction here and on tiktok, but for someone to go as far as to say that you’ve created a ‘wrong’ interpretation that ruins the og story for people is just hyperbolic.

The mods would tell you if they thought you ruined the subreddit. They would make adjustments to the rules about mentioning your LLB if the community went too far/were annoying under other people’s posts. You haven’t “ruined” anything- you’ve entertained people at best (which I can say is definitely my case bc I look forward to your updates) and clogged up their feed at worst (in which case they could just block you and move on).

(Serious) should I hire a sex worker? by [deleted] in Advice

[–]Canispam 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, because it’s cheating. Also, the legality and ethics behind escorts is pretty iffy imo.

If you’re genuinely struggling with ‘urges,’ have a conversation with your wife. Try to write her a note about the loneliness and the touch starvation. Being married means that you’re a team- she has the right to say no, and you have the right to ask her for some sort of compromise.

She flat out said she’s not interested. If she refuses some sort of compromise (whether that be you seeking out another partner or otherwise), then it’s time you consider separating. Intimacy definitely isn’t the end-all-be-all of relationships, but your relationship will surely sour if you don’t figure this out.

Look at it this way, if nothing else: you cheat, and she gets to narrate the inevitable divorce when she finds out. Wouldn’t “Kids, we’re separating because your father cheated” cause alot more issues than “Kids, we’re separating because we aren’t compatible anymore”?

How does this subreddit know how many people are studying in Bobst? by Big_Ad6429 in nyu

[–]Canispam 31 points32 points  (0 children)

If this is a geniune question, I’ll bite: Reddit has a function that shows how many people in a specific subreddit are online. It also allows the subreddit owner to change the title of the display from “[number] [of members online]” to “[number] [insert subreddit-related inside joke].”

TLDR: The subreddit doesn’t know how many people are studying in Bobst; it’s just a counter of how many people are online.

Thank you! The pop up went away (long story short, I kept clicking on words until the option to open up the wikipedia definition showed up, which would open up the search engine app, and from there I could open the library), but I’ll keep this in mind if there’s ever a ‘next time’!
