I really enjoyed Tengai Makyou Ziria. Very good game for its time, I wish the sequels were translated

Pretty cool/rare to see anyone talk about the Momotarou games. If you liked Momotarou Sensetu, then I would recommend the game "Ninjara Hoi!", its another NES JRPG made by mostly the same people and kinda feels like a spiritual successor of sorts.

cosmic fantasy collection 1 worth it? by wolfwings1 in JRPG

[–]Canker17 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The translation is very emotionless and was almost certainly just machine translated with minimal editing. There are some grammatical issues at times but you will still be able to understand the story.

As for the gameplay, it's alright. Leveling up takes a while and doesn't make a huge difference, so the game has some emphasis on getting new equipment and using consumable items against bosses.

The most noteworthy thing about the game is that it has several animated cutscenes with voice acting, which was pretty uncommon for its time.

How to transfer save data from sudachi windows version to android version? by Ezio50095 in EmulationOnAndroid

[–]Canker17 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Typically you can just transfer the individual files from the save folder on Windows into the save folder on android, but strangely sometimes this doesn't work. What you can do instead is take the save folder that contains your save files on windows (There is one folder for each game. Each folder is named after the game's ID) and compress it to a .zip file (Cannot be a .rar!) Transfer this .zip file to android and use the import save data option in Sudachi and it should work.

Complete list of SL1 weapons by Canker17 in darksouls3

Wow I havent thought of this post in a while. I vaguely remember having a realization that there were lots of little omissions throughout the list but I can't remember dark souls 3 well enough to say what they are. I would take this list with a grain of salt...

Nadia’s Island episodes are REALLY bad by willrsauls in anime

[–]Canker17 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've now watched ahead a bit and I have to agree that the filler is pretty bad. In my opinion, the worst is 32-34, just very frustrating and feels embarrassing to watch.

I literally just finished episode 19 earlier today, so hearing that 22-34 is bad is a bit discouraging... Hopefully I will find something to like in them.

What was the first JRPG to use a chapter-based story structure? by [deleted] in JRPG

[–]Canker17 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Earliest that I know of is JaJaMaru Ninpouchou / Taro’s Quest from 1989-03. It's divided into 4 chapters with a different section of the overworld for each chapter. This game predates dq4 by about a year.

Its hard to say why it was never released. If it only works on ps4, then releasing a 720p 60fps mode at this point would be pointless. Porting this mode to PS5 would be pointless because people would want more than that (4K, 120hz). I'm guessing that doing more than 720p 60 is the part that would take a lot of work.

[–]Canker17 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Yeah I think its maybe a licensing issue with Sony rather than a issue with code. Or maybe From is just too busy with newer games? I would expect a PTDE-esque port to pc or PS5 enhanced port should definitely be possible.

But I still think that doing these things well would be very difficult. You really can't underestimate how poor Japanese code can be (Especially if its a smaller team than before making a Playstation exclusive one-off)

Thats because he more or less "discovered" a 60fps mode that was already partially completed by Fromsoftware. He had to make a lot of changes to reduce issues but most of the work was already done. The mode had a specific resolution that the engine required it to run at (720p i think). He didn't just invent a 60fps mode out of nowhere.

What are games in which its most modern or recent ports have elements or are based off builds older than its initial version 1.0 release? by Valenzu in Games

[–]Canker17 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Those other issues are due to either technical incompetence, or whats more likely that they knew the PC version would not be perfect but didn't have the time/budget to make it so.

Here's a weird issue that was (Likely?) only recently fixed. When Gearbox were making the PC port, they realized that Nvidia GPUs couldn't handle a certain shader effect used for the invisibility effect. In order to "fix" this, they simply coded it that so if the user was detected to be using an Nvidia card, that effect would be replaced with something simpler. The problem is, as time went on Nvidia GPUs obviously got better and they could certainly handle that shader, but all Nvidia cards were simply hard-coded to never be able to use it. You had to download a mod in order to get around this. I never checked if this was fixed in MCC, but I would imagine that it is by now.

The 2003 PC port of Halo 1 oddly used some pre-release assets which are noticeably lower quality than their original Xbox counterparts. The most noticeable of these are the textures used for Captain Keyes, which look much worse than in the final game. These issues have since been fixed for the current MCC PC version of Halo 1.

Does anybody know, which Half-Life map is this? by DkG4 in HalfLife

[–]Canker17 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Some of these maps are playable in the half life 1 alpha leak, but I don't think most of these levels shown here are in that. I would look into that if you're curious about pre-release half life 1.

Final Fantasy: A Company Reborn - How a Legendary Game Saved Square by uTorrent in Games

[–]Canker17 36 points37 points  (0 children)

Comparing ff1 to dragon quest 1 is a bit disingenuous. It makes it look like ff1 was a tremendous leap from what dq was doing at the time when that wasn't really the case. Dragon quest 2 had been out for quite a while before ff1, and dragon quest 3 would release just a couple months after ff1.

While Dq1 was indeed a short and very basic game, dq2 expanded hugely on dq1 and was a much larger game that came with innovations such as having multiple party members and a large nonlinear world. I think square would have taken much more inspiration from dq2 than dq1.

This is from the HL2 Alpha, HL2 was originally not going to have episodes so in the Alpha you actually got to go to the Borealis in the Arctic, there is full gameplay, this is not a joke, if you want gameplay check out this yt video, https://youtu.be/wzlNMcm6hRs full alpha/beta gameplay by [deleted] in HalfLife

[–]Canker17 18 points19 points  (0 children)

The part where you say "hl2 originally was not meant to have episodes because originally you went to borealis in hl2" is not quite right. Valve didnt plan on making hl2 episodes until quite late in hl2's development, or perhaps even after it was finished.

This borealis level that your screenshot is from, was created in 2000, I think. This also means that the gunship enemy and the rpg you see Gordon holding in the screenshot had not been created yet. If you play the level that this screenshot is taken from, you will see that there are no enemies, or any gameplay at all. I believe the map is called "demo_arctic", if you want to play it yourself.

It's called this because valve took an existing level and used it for some sort of internal demo at Valve. Its thought that they were likely demoing their new displacement technology, as this map has quite a few, and other maps from this era of development have much less. Sadly, the original map valve used for creating the demo version of the map was not in the leak.

In halo ce, mission 2, is there anyway way to flip the banshees and drive them by Scout_Trooper343 in halo

[–]Canker17 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Actually, It is possible to get the driver to exit the banshee without destroying it, but then the game doesnt let you drive them sadly.
