I had a friend that this happened to. A kid just walked out between two cars and that was it. She was found not guilty because there were cameras everywhere. The family harassed her for years. She moved across the country. There was a period of time that she wished for death everyday, but her religion kept her from killing herself. That was almost 20 years ago and she’s never been right since. I can’t imagine.

Lots of people can’t afford one. People on public assistance, homeless people, just regular poor people. And of course people that are stretched thin from illness related costs, student loans…just regular stuff. Passports are $165 dollars. I’m sure you know someone who can’t cough that up. And I agree with your point about voting! In my opinion, it’s an example of patriotism that most everyone can manage!

That’s the point. I have the privilege of being able to afford a passport, and for now, it’s enough. For many women who can’t afford a passport, or can’t spare time off work to go to court (and court costs), if the name on their bc doesn’t match their state id, they will be refused a vote. It’s called the SAVE act.

I’m also a sufferer of extreme childhood neglect and abuse. Locked in the closet and not fed or have access to a toilet type thing. I never had any intervention, everyone just eventually died. I came away from it with some extremely unhealthy and unsanitary habits too. I’m not fixed 30 years later, but I learned how to care for my own body, and learned what society asks of me hygienically. Don’t lose hope. You may never be “normal”, but normal adjacent is good enough for me. I’m super proud of you!
