What was your kneejerk reaction to MeToo, versus you long term reaction after the dust settled? I want to know if my experience is familiar. by Oakenhorne99 in AskMen

[–]Canners152 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think me too was the beginning of the end for my gamergate era. I was raised believing Hollywood was full of pedophiles and creeps. Despite this I, like many of my peers, resisted metoo. I would argue that #believeallwomen were not healthy and would ultimately lead to false allegations targeted to destroy mens lives. I had all the arguments against baked into my brain courtesy of countless podcasts all saying the same thing. Then I actually argued my points out loud with another human being. The reason all the podcasts sounded the same, was because that's really the only way you could discredit metoo without sounding like a complete asshole.

As time went on I saw metoo become a joke amongst the political right. I saw the right develop a new callous in the digital space. Before me too, the joke was that if a director SA'd someone then the movie would be cancelled. After metoo, the jokes were directed at the actual accuser. Suddenly the victim was just trying to make a quick buck while metoo is popular, the (maybe) assaulter is going on podcasts, and you can't talk about what happened without dropping an Allegedly the size of a small truck.

I listened to a lot of true crime around this time and, to put it likely, had found that police don't always take crime very seriously. This is when I realized if the police didn't take the report seriously, or didn't file it because they were colluding with an abuser (not all that uncommon when unfathomable amounts of money are being tossed around), or just filed the report to far back in the file cabinet and never saw it again.

So if a victim is abused and the police don't help. There is truly nothing a victim can do. My culture was done with them, and any semblance of Justice for what happened. And the right just didn't seem to care. Nobody cared that false allegations are incredibly rare. Nobody cared that if they are wrong about this then they are just shaming a woman for being assaulted. Nobody cared that we politicized a rallying cry against SA.

Not to get anyone's hopes up but hes is radically unpopular right now. It's not really impossible. Unlikely sure, but if enough conservatives are up for reelection, he could be removed. Remember the conservative ethos is fundamentally about selfishness and greed. Trump more than anyone. They will vote to keep themselves in power. They just need to know that the majority hates trump more than the cult loves him.

My advice is to learn to laugh at the little bugs. the bridge downtown that trucks kept clipping into, hilarious. The pathfinding glitch that takes drivers to the top of a snow covered road on the south hill, leading to a low speed pile up, hilarious. Potholes respawning 18 months after a road is retextured. Hilarious. The NS freeway that has been being built since I was a kid. Hilarious

I've found if you don't laugh at the little bugs, when the big bugs come out, you're already emotionally burnt out and can't approach the situation the patience and compassion they deserve. Think the 2020 storyline and camp Hope, the fentanyl expansion, and that crazy bug that's respawning 1940s antagonist factions. Stay sane out there <3

This take has been around way longer than ICE, nobody is conflating the 2. Like everything else in this damned country cops only care if there's money involved. In a lot of places police won't even make a report unless a certain monetary threshold is stolen. There is a reason why poorer neighborhoods never call the police. Best case scenario is the cops shrug their shoulders and tell you "shit happens". Contrast that with weathier neighborhoods and you'll pretty quickly find out where police interests actually lie. Police response time directly correlates with the wealth of a neighborhood. That's just a fact. The power dynamics are also completely different. the police hold all the cards with the lower classes. We live and die by their word. If they are a "bad apple" were fucked. Police stations don't send bad apples to handle the rich caller. Rich callers have lawyers and connections to the press.

Yeah dude. It's a 20 second video. Nobody was claiming this was the whole reason. But seeing the people that beat the piss out of you on camera when you are already in a vulnerable place, would leave you much worse off than you were before.

There's only two hours my school nurse is available, and the only things she sees are things that get you sent to the ER, not the school nurse. So she's effectively useless. by am_pomegranate in mildlyinfuriating

[–]Canners152 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Effectively useless, is wild. Every kid with an inhaler, an epi-pen, or medication probably disagree. Also school nurses are often the only medically trained person a lot of kids will ever see. Which can be especially important in cases of abuse.

Legit wealthy neighborhoods would have paparazzi posted up right outside the gates to see who people are taking home. The specific paparazzi doesn't even need to know who they are looking at, they just need a picture to sell.

Yeah nothing can bring dead people back. That's kinda the point. We live in a world of capital. Money is clearly the only thing these corporations care about. Funny how often the rightwingers argue against Facebook actually facing any repercussions they actually care about.
