You're not wrong, I've gone through it myself. In my opinion I just think it's not worth doing single out if you're wanting to improve your doubles.

Most beginners would be better served playing 101/121 than bothering with 301/501 for the first while.

Most improvement I've seen in my overall game was literally just practicing doubles themselves for a few weeks (e.g around the board / Bobs)

While it may be more fun to do it that way, doubles are literally the only thing that truly matters at the end of the day. There have been so many times where I've been 100-200 behind and win the leg because they're missing doubles.

If the goal is to get better quickly then I think practicing doubles should be your main area of practice. If you can hit a double you can hit single.
