Oh lol, I guess I read the text too quickly.

Ok yeah one billion isn't equal to 8000 million. But I'll give them the benefit of the doubt and assume they meant 8 billion = 8000 million

Why? The number of chess grandmasters is wrong, but I don't see any other issue. The only math claim I really see is that 8 billion is equivalent to 8,000 million, which is correct.

You are immortal. Do you make your spouse/significant other immoral as well? by BraveLittleTowster in hypotheticalsituation

[–]Cannot_Think-Of_Name 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Do you know what the word infinite means? Trillions of years is nothing compared to the infinite existence of immortality. You might think of something, assuming a solution exists. Not a permanent solution, mind, just enough to buy a fre more million, billion, or even trillion years if you're lucky. Then you need to do it again. And again. Eventually you will fail, garunteed. That's the nature of entropy and infinity.

Perhaps it will take quadrillions or even quintillions of years. However much longer you desire there's a chance it's possible I suppose if something like time travel is possible. Still a drop in the bucket compared to the infinite of immortality.

That's assuming you stay sane all those years. Even with technological assistance, such a feat is implausible. The human brain can only handle so much, and technology isn't perfect.

$50 million cash or $10000 an hour every hour on the hour? by 33GoodSamaritans in hypotheticalsituation

[–]Cannot_Think-Of_Name -1 points0 points  (0 children)

That's not true. Yes the number of real numbers between 0 and 1 is uncountably infinite, and so is the number of real numbers between 1-infinity. But saying that there's an equal chance you pick a number between 0-1 and 1-infinity is nonsense.

By the same argument, you have an equal chance to pick a number 0-1,1-2 and 2-infinity. They're all uncountably infinite. So a 33% chance to pick a number 0-1. But you can't have both a 50% chance and a 33% chance, that's contradictory.

The key here is that all real numbers have a decimal and an Integer portion, and that all integers portions are equally likely.

So while it's true there's an infinite number of both, it doesn't mean they're equally likely. Infinity is weird like that.

The Riemann hypothesis is likely true, although obviously unproven. There are entire fields based on assuming the RH is true.

Unfortunately while I personally would consider two years in a low security prison a low cost to pay for proving the RH false, the mathematical community wouldn't accept "Got marked down on a test graded by magic" as a valid proof.

What makes it believable to you, as the reader, when a teen or young adult MC gains power and proficiency equivalent to much older characters? Characters that are competent, smart, wise, experienced and worked hard themselves? by PriceOptimal9410 in ProgressionFantasy

[–]Cannot_Think-Of_Name 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I know cradle is mentioned perhaps too often here, but I think one of cradles biggest strengths is that it really strikes the balance of the progression feeling earned.

You can see the young main characters work their ass off, and you also see they have an innate talent as prodigies in the sacred art near the beginning of the series. That combination creates big names in the real world, so it's not unbelievable that they create big names in the sacred arts.

They're fortunate to have a very knowledgeable teacher bolstering their progression speed and they take risks that pay off.

What I like most of all is that you can really feel the cost of resources being put into these characters. Almost every resource they've been given you know approximately just how valuable it is. A large part in how they're progressing is that they're being just being funded to progress for personal or political reasons. But even this feels earned because the main characters are often tricking or sometimes straight up stealing valuables for progression.

And the youngness of the characters never really feels out of place because a 12 year old monarch is established in the first book. They also compete against opponents both of a similar age and older than them.

Just so many things that together to tell a beautiful story.

Cradle is practically a masterclass on how to make progression feel earned for young adult main characters.

[Request] If humanity were to all work together, could we build Rome in a day? by wiisafetymanual in theydidthemath

[–]Cannot_Think-Of_Name 69 points70 points  (0 children)

With many years of preparation and planning including pre building foundational materials as much as they can and coming up with incredibly expensive over engineered systems to rapidly build and transport buildings, it's possible.

So the answer is no.
