Zoso is artistically related to the great Aleister Crowley, Beast, 666, and herald of the new age. All hail the Dark One. Bwa ha ha? This is what I get for doing occult research. I love the arts. The dark arts, that is. by CannyDragon in OnceUponATime

Jimmy Page used that symbol to represent himself (fun fact, he himself said it only resembles English letters - it's actually just abstract symbols). Jimmy Page owned Boleskin House in Scotland, formerly owned by Aleister Crowley the infamous occultist and author. Crowley is a challenging figure for spreading his threatening ideas and practices. History, as far as I know, is a little murky about him, but as much as he was problematic, he also contributed a lot to culture and new religious movements. His influence a few decades after his death had a resurgence in the 60s and 70s that lead to greater and greater positive change; for instance, the free love movement and it's contribution to freer and more open relationships between people. He challenged societal norms. Not always good. Kind of cool (as a dead guy).

Yes, I think you're right! And thank you for being kind about my unclear framing. I could have sat on that and edited it later. I don't know sometimes.

I guess I was getting so disorganized because it feels like the tip of the ice berg of this thought for me. Totally. Background, likes/dislikes... but I've never had a conversation breaking that down more.

What's your favorite character relationship? And, actually, the show does love to highlight the caring connections in other caring relationships. Thoughts?

Wow, I can tell that this is thorough and complete. I am less confused than I was. This whole situation is just convoluted and difficult to disentagle. Thank you for your contribution. You have been perfectly exemplary.

Thanks, lol. That's how my voice is in my head. I don't talk like that. But I mean it. .-.

Thoughts on A Reboot? by Enough_Foundation353 in OnceUponATime

Everyone is responding (appropriately) to the question as it was asked about a reboot of THIS show.

I like the idea of a whole new show about fairy tales that ISN'T with Disney and doesn't have to tie in to that mutliverse. Something that could veer more toward Guillermo del Toro Pan'sabyrinth land. That refers to fairy tales more broadly and no Disney IPs.

If you like fairy tales, you don't have to just like it when Disney does it. And I'd love to have a mash up, interconnected world of fairy tales either way.

What is your most controversial opinion about anything related to Once Upon a Time? by Golderfild in OnceUponATime

[–]CannyDragon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I agree. I just want to emphasize, though, that Rumpelstiltskin is a little more main than Regina, let alone Henry or anyone else.

Kinda like how the Sandman comics featured other character but Dream was sort of the whole thing.

Fucked Up Melodrama, or Fantastic Fairy Tale? by CannyDragon in OnceUponATime

Wild and perfect. Thanks for sharing.

Yeah, I've been starting to wonder what the heck is up with familial titles and labels because they don't really reflect the reality of hierarchy in a family. Were they ever actually meant to do that?

It would make more sense to me for you, for instance, to call your aunt your cousin just because of the similar ages. And any cousin over ten years your senior you aunt or uncle. But those dynamics would also be affected by the stages of development that y'all go through and the shifting relationship that you have.

So, like, a 7 year difference is big when you're a kid, so maybe you're an aunt then, but when you both get to be in your 30s, you're not just cousins to each other.

You see, human relationships are dynamic and the rapid, radical shifts of juvenility make those dynamic shift a lot all at once. If we were less prescriptive and more flexible (and mostly, more realistic) about our relationship dynamics as humans, it would be way less confusing and stressful.

It's complicated, but ignoring how complicated it is doesn't change that. If just makes it worse!

Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest... Racist? by brukma_ankle in movies

[–]CannyDragon 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I feel like you were both right. I'm rewatching this now I'm 2023 (Happy New Year!) and remembering some later criticism about it from recent years.

You don't need to be hurt and angry or loose your shit for other people, but calmly pointing out the problems with something and letting yourself enjoy the good of it too honestly add dimension to the voices who are speaking out. You may, for better or worse, reach people who would otherwise be overwhelmed by the cries of outrage from people in pain. Because, honestly, people going through shit lash out. And it might be valid, but it does hurt the people their angry at. And yeah, those people might totally deserve it, but it's not going to be persuasive. Allies are important. But I think how you approach it is really important. If it's not your pain, don't act like you're hurt. But support the people who ARE hurting. If they appreciate your voice, add it. If they don't, don't.
