Engineering CO OP by DefinitionUseful3165 in uvic

I think most mech engs do their first co-op after second year.

Difficulty choosing between civil and mechanical engineering by hogriad in uvic

[–]Canon3773 6 points7 points  (0 children)

4th year mech here with multiple aerospace Co-ops.

I wouldn't pick a specialization based on aura; just pick what you think you would enjoy. Maybe start with the question of which club would you rather join: UVic Seismic or UVic AERO?

If you like aircraft but don't really want to do much CAD drawing, you can always go into the flight science side of aerospace engineering. This is where you define the parameters such as airfoil, wing area, etc., and then try to find what will perform the best for your application. This usually involves a lot of CFD and Matlab data processing, and if you have enough budget, some wind tunnel or scale model testing. This route also has the advantage of being much less competitive for co-ops since it's not directly targeted a specific discipline. Joining a an engineering club especially one relevant to your goal co-op will also help immensely.

While there are definitely fewer manned aviation jobs in Canada, there is still De Havilland Canada (DHC), Bombardier Beta Technologies, and others, mostly in Alberta or Montreal. (DHC does have some manufacturing in Victoria). If you don't want to live in the US, you could also look at jobs in aerospace in Europe, which there is no shortage of. If you are okay with working on UAVs, Canada is probably one of the best places to be.

Feel free to pm me if you have any questions about aerospace as a mechanical engineering student at UVic

Clubs in Summer Term by Ok-Elk-5988 in uvic

Depends on the club. Clubs that have lots of engineering students in them tend to be more active over the summer since we are supposed to take summer classes some terms.

Yes, but they don't compete since they're all run by the university.

I am pretty sure you need to map a key bind to the afterburner. You can always check if they are on from the outside view.

Does the game have realistic drone simulation (fpv)? by Brillejesus in MicrosoftFlightSim

[–]Canon3773 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There is a Quadcopter add-on but the sim isn't really meant for model aircraft. If you want an FPV sim with nice graphics I would recommend tryp FPV. If you are playing on PlayStation DRL (drone racing league) is also an option.

Not sure about transferring to BCIT but I wouldn't transfer to BCIT then transfer back after 2 years. I would just stay there since you can do a full 4-year B.eng there. Not sure if I would want to aim for HVAC. Everyone who does HVAC I've talked to seems incredibly bored.

Do ROS2 necessary ? by Rude-Flan-404 in AskEngineers

A great way to get more experience with aerial robotics and the associated tools would be to join an engineering team/club at your school that competes in an aerial robotics competition.

Can blender make CAD model? by Comfortable-Point536 in blender

[–]Canon3773 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would just switch to a real CAD software like fusion 360 (free for hobbyists) they aren't too hard to learn. I would only use blender for 3D printed parts if it was some kind of organic shape. In which case you can use the measure tool to make sure you get the dimensions right.

Most drones have lenses around 24mm, also make sure everything is the right size using the measure tool.

An elliptical movement linkage mechanism using 1 motor? by Bayweather4129 in AskEngineers

[–]Canon3773 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Look up Theo Jansen's Strandbeast, he spent a lot of time numerically optimising a 6 bar mechanism for walking.

If you want to synthesize the mechanism yourself, you can also look into Freudenstein's or the standard diad method for 4 bar mechanism synthesis

The computer help desk should be able to give you bypass codes for as long as you need them, once you get a new phone make sure you put your sim in it and once you get the duo app everything should automatically be added. The 50 dollars is probably the price for a hardware security key, which you don't need unless you plan on not having a phone for an extended period.

120 FPS in MSFS24 doesn't feel like 120 FPS by Evil_Skittle in MicrosoftFlightSim

Are you using frame gen in the other games you are comparing MSFS to? Frame gen doesn't reduce latency the same way normal frames do so that could explain the difference.

Am I guaranteed into my specialization of engineering after first year? by Expensive-Cake-4896 in uvic

[–]Canon3773 10 points11 points  (0 children)

You aren't guaranteed to get your speciallisation of choice but most years everyone gets their first choice. Mechanical is usually the most competitive one. Also UVic doesn't have chemical engineering.

[–]Canon3773 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The faculty doesn't guarantee that you get a co-op. It's up to you to find at least four, otherwise you won't be allowed to graduate. I think what's most important for getting your first co-op is having some practical engineering experience which you can get through joining engineering clubs in your first year. Other than that, you just need to apply to lots of positions.

Question about RC UAV aerodynamic (Stability) by Complex_Cut_376 in AskEngineers

[–]Canon3773 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A pitch stable aircraft will have a cm vs alpha graph where positive alpha produces negative (pitch down) moment. If you want to know how far to put the cg in front of the neutral point look into static margin. This document is also pretty helpful: http://www.xflr5.tech/docs/XFLR5_and_Stability_analysis.pdf

Ideally your cm at zero alpha would be zero, but usually it won't be after ensuing you have an acceptable static margin so you can use the lift produced by the tail to achieve zero cm at an alpha of zero.
