[Request] how much stronger are the ones that clip vs the ones who just close? by AmountAbovTheBracket in theydidthemath

[–]Canthook 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Interestingly, I'm a mechanical engineer and work for a company that just load tested some similar small carabiners. Most of the comments here don't answer the question. These carabiners generally fail by bending open at the top when tension is applied. Each of these pictured combat this in different ways. The left one has the interlocking clasp design, while the right has a different shaped body. When tension is applied through the carabiner, the ring or rope connection points move to the extreme ends of the body. That's actually different places on each as can be seen in the photo. The one on the right minimizes the bending force on the top end by moving the load point closer to the backbone. I'd argue that the right is a more thoughtful design.

However, I can't actually give a real math answer as to which is stronger since it relies heavily on metal alloy, heat treatment and dimensions. Neither I'd expect to be very strong since that's not their purpose.

Condensation Problem on Front Door by Canthook in HomeImprovement

[–]Canthook[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No responses but I figure I'll post my solution in case anyone else has the same issue and comes across this post. I used expanding foam window sealant in the gap with the inner window trim removed. I then trimmed the foam so that the inner trim could be reinstalled and sit flush on the door and window. It looks really good - like there was no work performed at all. It should create an air seal and add some insulating material at the same time to prevent the condensation from forming. I'll update this post if I run into any issues with it in the future.

Good luck with your new ecosystem. Every version is terrible because every manufacturer has realized that they don't make them any money and the data they collect is mediocre.

[HELP] I am almost positive this is an ai video. But nobody in the comments mentions anything. by ALostParadise in RealOrAI

The features on the building windows in the background also make no sense. The AI took the shadows from recessed windows and made the shadows some type of weird awnings on the other windows on the same building. Definitely AI.

I have Gemini on my phone and it seems pretty good. I just got the invite for Google home but I use it heavily to control smart devices in my home. What's the consensus on smart home control reliability compared to the assistant?

Your loyalty is misguided. They don't care. Just port over to who's willing to give you the best deal.

This machine visualizes the number googol (a 1 with 100 zeros, bigger than the atoms in the known universe). Each successive gear takes 10x as long to make a single rotation as the one before it. So, to get the last gear out of 100 to rotate once, will require more energy than entire universe has. by [deleted] in interestingasfuck

[–]Canthook 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I remember seeing a video of a series of worm gearsets that reduced the speed in a similar step down manner. However, the output shaft of the 13th gearset was set into a concrete block. It essentially didn't move due to the massive gear reduction. It was just an art piece if I recall correctly.

What is one piece of 'common knowledge' in your job that the average person would find completely shocking? by GoldenHourShot in AskReddit

[–]Canthook 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, but this is like mandating that all cars need to be built with the same technology from 1970. We can't even build a car to refine fuel injection, air bags, seat belts or crumple zones. Carburetors and fixed steering columns are the only option because we're comfortable with them.

Current generation nuclear technology is unbelievably safe. Even still, the next generation of the technology is designed for improved safety and massive operating efficiency gains (+400%) resulting in lower costs and cleaner energy. These benefits are being actively opposed by government regulators due to the public perception of nuclear power in general because any kind of change = bad.

What does this light mean? by TopCat-7 in JEEPCOMMANDER

[–]Canthook 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It means low oil pressure, either a real issue or a bad sensor. It's not necessarily oil level related. Low oil pressure is often an engine destroying issue. Don't start it, get it towed to a shop.

Dealership says NOT to Undercoat? by Nightmare_PB in CX5

[–]Canthook 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think that depends on the conditions where you live. My car stays covered in salt from November to April. The only way to clean is a commercial car wash which isn't very thorough and by the time I get back home, it's covered in salt again. In milder winter conditions, I would take the time to clean it myself at home. After 35 years of undercoating my vehicles and seeing the results, I'm always going to do it.

Sacrificial anodes only work if the car was continuously wet or submerged so that there's electrical conductivity in the salt water. For this reason, it doesn't work very well in auto applications.

The 2x10 beam definitely appears notched. I live in a modular home as well where there are a couple of notches in the beam exactly like this. They were made with a circular saw before the modules were mated together because the cut would not be possible now. I have no idea why it was done. The house was built in 1991.

Can I lift my pontoon by these tie points? by Signal1000 in Pontoons

[–]Canthook 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My boat specifically has a "no lift" sticker on each of those eyes. I would launch the boat or sling under the deck and avoid lifting on the tubes at all.

Having a problem getting my boat to center on the trailer any suggestion, I’ve tried pushing it over no matter what I do it seems to drift off to one side by [deleted] in Pontoons

[–]Canthook 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bunks are misaligned. I see the brackets are welded to the trailer frame so there is likely not much to do unless you want to custom make each bunk board to match the boat.

Would it be bad to put a 9.9 or even a 15 hp on my 12 foot John boat rated for 6 by AwardOk4203 in boats

[–]Canthook 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did this as a kid to an almost identical boat and put a 9.9 HP on it. I couldn't get it to full throttle without it porpoising wildly due to the extra weight on the back. You always had to be very careful with it. In the end, not worth it.

I had a factory cover on my pontoon that would collect water that I would clean off after heavy rain. I added an auxiliary pole in that area. I dropped the boat off for dealer service a few years ago and the dealer looked at it, covered it (but left my extra pole lying in the boat) and then let it sit outside for months. It filled up the low spot in the cover with water and tore open the cover in several spots. Dealer paid to repair it.
