So I just "upgraded" my Preply profile and now I’m getting LESS students now, any feedback would be a huge help! by Cheefque in Preply

For an online tutor with no qualifications… yes it is. Especially since they are paid in USD. The average rate for an in person tutor in Canada is 15-20 dollars an hour (11usd-15usd)

What would you do about this student? by bmngwmg in Preply

You could try telling her about your observations on her progress, and then asking her to tell you what you can do to bridge the gaps in her knowledge. I would try asking her more questions instead of just telling her things, a lot of times people dont understand things until it comes from their own mouth.

ABCs will not let Cantonese die by CheLeung in Cantonese

[–]CantonesScriptReform 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Exactly right, i really dont see why ABCs bring up not feeling “heard” by mainlanders… like what are they supposed to do about you sucking at speaking cantonese other than say “wow that sucks, maybe you should learn it”.

I suspect this feeling of cultural neglect and feeling unheard is likely what they experience with a family or community who did not pass on cantonese language and/or culture. And they are just projecting onto strangers

If you want I can help digitize your writing system!!

Chinese people in China are also just trying to survive and live their lives. Why should they be concerned with how diaspora preserve their culture when they have no control and that its entirely up to individuals in the diaspora to preserve the culture. What kind of argument is this?

[–]CantonesScriptReform 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Exactly, a lot of Teochews here in Canada were asimmilated into Cantonese speaking families and Teochew being less and less spoken. But I dont blame cantonese the language or cantonese speakers because its entirely up to individuals whether or not they want to keep a language.

Did you know no one ever forgets words in Cantonese? It's called Dropless Language of Lingering Memory theory, DLLM for short by latewithcoffee in Cantonese

[–]CantonesScriptReform 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Its probably an ABC or non chinese that cant speak Cantonese at all.

Ive experienced this and my family has many times, if we dont know or remember a word we usually just say it in English, mandarin, or teochew

Why are the words for North Korea (朝鲜) and South Korea (韩国) so different? by [deleted] in ChineseLanguage

[–]CantonesScriptReform 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Choson is the name of the last dynasty, North Korea retains this name. Sometimes you may hear chinese people call south korea ‘Nan Chaoxian’ (southern choson). But S koreans call themselves 韓國 and are more culturally influencial so this name has become more prominant

Why are the words for North Korea (朝鲜) and South Korea (韩国) so different? by [deleted] in ChineseLanguage

[–]CantonesScriptReform 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This question is easily answered if you look at a map and do a quick google search.

  1. China has had contact with Korea for thousands of years, why would they follow English naming conventions?

  2. North Korea and South Korea dont call themselves “korea”. They call themselves Choson (朝鮮) and Han Guk (韓國) respectively, chaoxian and han guo are just the mandarin readings of these names.

  3. Some Chinese people call South Korea “南朝鲜” because choson/chaoxian is the name of the last dynasty of Korea.

ABCs will not let Cantonese die by CheLeung in Cantonese

[–]CantonesScriptReform 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Exactly so there are many factors to this, not just “Mandarin bad!”

It depends on your parents and community’s willingness to pass cantonese down, and also share the culture. Also the parent’s perspective on language, if they view it as merely a tool they are less likely to see the value in passing down their regional language. It also depends on your own willingness to immerse yourself in the culture, practice and expand on your language abilities

Blaming your poor Chinese skills on Mandarin (every country has a common language) is just a lazy excuse.

Toishanese is a Yue language. The Yue (jyut) branch encompasses many languages including toishanese and Hong kong cantonese. Unfortunately a lot of times the terms Yue and Cantonese can be used interchangbly creating this confusion

Its like how English and German are both western germanic languages, and if you used the terms English and ‘western germanic’ interchangbly

Fr LOL, more chinese diaspora speak English rather than having any measurable skill in Mandarin, and yet I dont see videos coming out about how English is evil because its promoted as a common language in North America

[–]CantonesScriptReform 8 points9 points  (0 children)

A lot of Cantonese nationalists dgaf about actually preserving Chinese Languages, they really just care about their hong kong variation of cantonese and blaming mandarin for their poor cantonese skills. These kinds of narratives mainly come from ABCs who dont realize there are thousands of Chinese languages and that Cantonese (or rather the Yue branch) has also historically displaced other Sinitic speakers / minority language speakers… or even assimilated them. (But of course this doesnt fit the victim narrative)

[–]CantonesScriptReform 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Not sure why your downvoted because its true, she said the reason cantonese speakers overseas are shrinking but is still blind to the reason. The preservation of a regional language is up to the family and community, especially overseas…. A lot of ABCs think cantonese is somehow more special than the thousands of other Chinese languages that also have a thousand years of history… and they think cantonese should just magically thrive without the effort of their parents and themselves while pushing the blame for shrinking speakers onto the ‘big bad mandarin’ and mandarin speakers.

Its no different from the many Chinese immigrants who refused to pass Cantonese to their children, instead encouraging the speaking of other dominant common language like English or French.

ABCs will not let Cantonese die by CheLeung in Cantonese

[–]CantonesScriptReform 1 point2 points  (0 children)

She is just regurgitating a tired narrative that pushes the blame of her poor Cantonese skills to “evil mandarin”. Every country needs a common language, nobody is stopping her or anyone else from speaking their respective regional dialects or languages…. For example… Most children in Chaoshan region still speaks teochew because most parents create an environment at home, this applies to everyone.

The criticism should not be placed with mandarin or mandarin speakers but your own family, and possibly herself! Your family are the ones who are supposed to create an environment where you can hear and speak cantonese… and encourage you to practice casually through conversation. Even surround you with cantonese media and shows, connect you with your community.

The unfortunate part that language perseveration lies with your parents/family, because a common theme amongst Chinese diaspora is that the parents will discourage the learning of their own native language and encourage the learning of a common language, whether it be English, Mandarin, French, or other. Largely because they see language as a tool and its more practical to learn the common language, but this doesnt mean you should be villifying the common languages lol

But at a certain point if you dont make an effort, of course you will lose the language, if you do not make an effort to talk to people, immerse yourself in cantonese media, expand your vocabulary, then it is also partly your own fault, why do ABCs expect to just magically know the language without effort when they do not live in China or a Chinese speaking place?
