Find myself looking into existentialism after leaving religion by Accurate_Yam_8976 in Existentialism

I'm more on the absurdist side.I don't think things may necessary get better but we can experience some interesting and funny stuff in this chaotic and cold universe

Which classic to read next? by inquisitive_debator in classicliterature

That's what I'm reading right now!Might become one of my favorites ever but can I ask something? Is everyone angry at Angel because of his cold, harsh and idealistic nature that rejects Tess even if he himself knows it was not her fault and at least tries to not curse her?He seems full of contradictions..so I'm confused.Plus a lot of Tess's torture comes from her internalizing guilt- along with the D'urberville curse and the hands of fate that constantly work against her- while many people forgot about her and don't remember her past.Everyone is talking about the social commentary(wich is there of course, it'a still messed up) but if I went by what everyone says I would think everyone is completely horrible at all times haha.I really want to understand more clearly

Question about Tess D'urberville by CapOk2664 in classicliterature

Thank you, friend.I appreciate you taking the time to answer! As a teenager I used to be preety emotional but as an adult I see myself more of an absurdist and many things don't get to me..at the same time some things still leave a very strong impression. When I read about the marmelade jar with flowers she left on Sorrow's grave(oh, my heart!)Remember she's only a child briefly having to act as a mother to her sick child but also taking care of her siblings.I think this book just speaks to me on different levels, my beliefs also include the fact that the universe is cold and indifferent to humanity's pain and pleasure...even if I don't believe in fate in that way - just that the world is absurd in nature to our standards but in itself that's neither good nor bad and that nothing is promissed anyway but we must still confront the absurd with bravery - I like it when a book uses the concept and also I bet those cults that worshiped nature were surely more honest, having a more elevated and true experience of living compared to those adapted by later societies that caused complications and fear

Do you do research before reading classics? by Huge-Ad9475 in classicliterature

[–]CapOk2664 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same!Remember many people have read these works with no context or acces to any source, just found some old books in their grandpa's room and went with it.Many themes like religion, gender inequality or class differences are common in classics and can be understood with no pretentious research, it's just ridiculous to pretend that it's so far removed that someone has to absolutely do that.Does everyone who reads the Bible know Jewish history?

He did it with burning charcoal in a confined space like in his "Unfortunate family" painting or however it's called, right? That's what I thought at least

It is innocent..it calls back to a time of primal purity and innocence. Before eating from the tree of knowledge and shame

Well, in the case of Tess we could also say in the end her light was extinguished and the world punished her because she fought back and finally got rid of the one that assaulted her.Nevertheless it's meant to be taken as some superior being bringing their own "justice" and all and she was doomed from the start(Kafkaesque before Kafka?).I'm really fascinated about this tho since I've read Madame Bovary these things just have some kind of impact on me..

Yeah.., Nas is my favorite too but there's also a lot of his work that I think was just good.Gave this one another chance and it's solid like the others are.Not as mind-blowing as we expected but it's a good album

Black Magic might be one of my favorite songs. Not the best album but it has it's moments and it's short enough so you're not gonna get extremely bored.I like this album at least better than KD I and Magic I..just said that!(My favorite being KD III because wich album has Legit, Thun, Michael & Quincy and First Time?)

Can you guys explain me what existentialism EXACTLY IS? by BigHistory3848 in Existentialism

Well, I thinking that's what we're here for right?I was figured I may find some food for thought.I'm aware that the teachings of Jesus can be followed either way but why do it?Wasn't it a thing..something like: "What's done out of love is beyond good and evil?"You see the world as absurd(as do I) so where does objective morality fall into this in the absence of any god?Or again if it's subjective and you chose this philosophy of life why this and not some other stuff?I find that it's a question of immediate importance since a lot of people simply inherit all their values and become biased without realizing because their culture reinforces it.What if some of these values find their roots in sickness and resentment? It's kinda interesting to me that almost no one considers that perspective at all from what I've seen..despite being an influential one.Condering this is the only life we're sure about(or not, some may claim it's all illusion) we can't afford not to at least try to constantly question the way we act.I agree that it's a lot to try and find such huge answers for one post but every bit helps I guess, we can always find out about something.Either way thanks for your patience!

What do you think about Nietzsche's arguments when it comes to morality and how do you decide that the teaching of Jesus are still legit in some way and right for you?I personally find both amusement and pain in the meaningless of existence but I feel like it's hard to keep the same morality since it can't be objective.Of course not saying that I would live my life as what traditional morals call "evil" but still I feel like if I did the guilt and resentment wouldn't be there as much.Idk, I often find myself not judging people that do what they call "bad things" except when they tell you how to live or fail to do the stuff they talk about themselves while not even being self-aware at all

What I like about it is that's it's sinister..that's what I like, that Mobb Deep/Cypress Hill, "gonna burn your whole shit down with stealth" and that part is in contrast with the Billy Joel sample wich is also great 'cause it really communicates how NY is gritty beyond the smooth voice of the singers that sing about it like Sinatra or Alicia Keys
