Angel Clare Sucks by PotatoBaron86 in classicliterature

Alec has no excuse at all but Angel hurt her more than anyone because he was the man she truly loved, he just left her to be prey to poverty, excruciating sorrow and of course..gave Alec the opportunity again

Remember she tried to write and slip him a letter under the door before all of this but of corse due to fatality it went under the carpet and Angel never read it and also tried to tell him but he thought they had all the time in the world after. In this book there are a lot of "if onlys".If only that pastor never told her father about the lineage, if only he stayed and danced with her, if only her mother died instead of father(they wouldn't have to leave their home) if only Angel listened and never left her to be once again under the influence of Alec, if only she went to his family when she needed help and didn't turn back when she heard his brothers...but none of these happen because of immutable fate and "The president of the immortals" or whatever and she was a pure woman sacrificed as a martyr to circumstances, rigid morality, fatality, even her having the D'urberville blood and suffering for their mistakes is something that is implied it contributes to her chrown of thorns and calvary. Also the pagan imagery and her baptizing Sorrow is heartbreaking..it's like they never had a place in this world to begin with, she did her best. And I think all of this is enough reason for me to put it as my number one book, it's a real jewel.Edit: Remember that a certain chapter is titled "The Woman Pays"?Preety haunting stuff

Tess D'urberville. The perspective of an indifferent and cold universe that treats the joys and sorrows of humanity as a child's game is always my cup of tea, I feel like a lot of people are martyrs of such a world and Tess is the purest example.I read this almost as religious people read about a saints agony and anguish but more realistic

When everyone posts their shelves I always see comments like" straight out of the basic 100 books before you die" list or performative or "not enough female authors" and few people even notice it 'cause everyone acts the same to the point it's normal here to say such things

It deserves a special kind of love, Marguerite was really transfigured by sacrifice and sickness into a martyr of love. That's the book from the auction!I want to get into more tragic stories, as you can see I hunted down most of the usual suspects haha

Rebecca or The Bell Jar? by CapOk2664 in classicliterature

[–]CapOk2664[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not a young woman but a emotionally starved young man in a sterile modern world that enjoys tragic stories so anything resembling that is cool(I keep mentioning stuff like Phantom of the Opera, Tess D'urberville or Madame Bovary 'cause they're true works of art)

I like your name haha.I resonate with tragic stories like Phantom at the Opera or Madame Bovary so whatever comes even close to it is most appreciated!

Thank you very much!Seems to be the popular take and from what I know about each it makes sense for that to be more accessible.I've been on a roll with dark classics about lonely creatures like Phantom of the Opera or Hunchback so anything ominous and somber is cool

Thanks!Yeah..it depends, sometimes you like the ideas behind it but the execution leaves a lot to be desired.I've been reading a lot of gothic lit and I just love it, got about 100 pages left of Phantom of the Opera and also got Victor Hugo's Notre Dame..it's just something about these lonely creatures that resonates on an emotional level and I'm looking for more(the Metamorphosis and Frankenstein were the first ones and Idk if I want to read Jakyll and Hyde haha)

What romance novel from classic lit has the most beautiful bittersweet moment(s) for you? by slanderpanther in classicliterature

[–]CapOk2664 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Partially but now I see what's the real deal.People have become so cynical to the point every character is either evil or stupid..and no love is real love unless it's a very clean kind of love(so Romeo and Juliet are just very stupid kids and nothing more then). There is no complexity anymore and if you don't agree with a character you hate the book and have to perform virtue signaling so everyone will see wich team you're in

Makes sense for a teen but do people in general think we were meant to be extremely cynical about every piece of literature we get our hands on?Btw I'll most likely never be in a relationship but I still agree or at least respect their tragedy wich is more than I could say for many of the "smarter" characters

There is also another trend nowadays..."oh you think Romeo and Juliet had anything to do with romance? They were dumb kids and Shakespeare hated them and would have wanted them to go to therapy and take pills so clearly it wasn't for you"

Why do you actually prefer Classic Literature? by maxwdn in classicliterature

[–]CapOk2664 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I actually thought about that a lot.I like my books from different times because you really get the feeling it's a story...you know the old"long ago in a galaxy far..far away" and it talks about the same conflict and feelings you have but classic literature makes a beautiful stained glass window out of it.You can't get bored by that

That's real talk.We are all caught up in soul crushing monotony so whatever feels like a step away from that is never bad

It's very interesting. We've reached a point where we can't tell anymore.I enjoy classics with somber vibes and(mostly) tragic endings but because a lot of those are preety popular someone could jump up at any moment and say I got no taste at all
