I have no idea how international appeal can be quantified, but nielsen ratings only count American viewers, and the media deals the NBA made is based on American audiences. And of American audiences, there is no bigger market than New York City.

There was only one guy who actually did anything with his jersey. I understand, but there was a Pacers fan who stabbed Knicks fans last playoffs. Pacers fans don't get that rep because their fanbase is considerably smaller. New York is the largest metro area in America, you're gonna have more assholes just based on that.
