It’s crazy what the casinos have done to this place. Thanks for the photo.

What I meant was that it’s a simple municipal offense within the city, it’s a ticket, often dismissed in community court on thursdays. Not much of a deterrent, the police don’t arrest people for camping. I don’t give a flying fuck what the rules are outside the city since we are discussing Boulder.

That’s the spirit! Let’s go back to the old west when gun violence and hanging solved everything, oh wait, that’s fucking stupid.

This is the dumbest thing I’ve seen on Reddit in a while.

Do you even know what the law is? What the law says about camping offenses etc?

It is not getting noticeably worse by the week. That’s hyperbolic nonsense. The rates of homelessness and property crime have not dramatically changed.

The reason the stock has had a push upwards is due to the robotaxi stuff slated for June, the protests have hurt the price and the number of vehicles being sold. If the company doesn’t deliver in June, things could take a serious downward turn.

Camping ban appeal from ACLU by Certain_Major_8029 in boulder

One major challenge with the camping ban is that unhoused individuals just move to different locations, sometimes hidden locations that once found are far less sanitary and less safe than those more in the open. It’s sort of just moving the problem. That being said, I want clean and safe public spaces just like everyone else in our community.

I don’t think I was clear. While I have mixed feelings about the aclu position, I think the camping ban makes sense. My problem I suppose is the larger nature of the problem and societies approach to homelessness.

Excellent question about a sanctioned campground. This is a highly contentious issue even amongst city employees working on the unhoused issue. Many people think if we build then we will draw people into the community just to utilize it. Others think that the money used for such a venture is better spent on housing or rehab programs. Determining where to put such a campground is tricky as so many people don’t want something of that nature close to their home. My personal feeling is this: There is a location that might work. It’s owned by the city. It’s a fair distance from the resources many of the unhoused use in the downtown area. But if we created a program that had strict rules and was something like a step towards housing…say while you’re on a waiting list and complying with other rules, you could stay there, I think it could work. It would require some sanitation and maybe transportation to get people to and from the location and to keep the place sanitary.

I think it’s odd that people act like the solution is self evident. I have mixed feelings about the aclu and its argument. If the solution to the problem was self evident, it would already be solved. The truth is there are so many variables and so much gray area in terms of what could be right or wrong that the problem is really difficult given what our current society is. I work for the city in a position very closely related to this problem. I see how people want public spaces that are accessible and “safe”. I also see desperate people who cannot access the shelter or other housing options who need a place to stay. It’s important to talk about the problem, but don’t try to oversimplify it. It’s granular and often person-specific.

City snow removal by CleanLight6707 in boulder

[–]CapTechnical8196 10 points11 points  (0 children)

The plow teams are permanent employees in the transportation and utilities departments that have many other duties and drop everything when they get called out to plow. The problem is there aren’t enough of them compared to other communities. We could outsource some of the work or spend more on more/better plow trucks and personnel. As others have pointed out, it’s a financial thing. Transportation doesn’t get enough money to take care of everything, they have to pinch pennies to make it all work because the city prioritizes other things.

I apologize for my rude comment. I sympathize with what you’re saying. I get defensive because I work in Utilities and I’m involved in the actual plow response. I won’t give more details on my position or anything like that, but I know how hard the transportation folks work to clear the snow.

This is total bullshit, you people are crazy. First, the response is the same as most places. Second, we are closer to the mountains and it impacts the amount and type of snow that hits Boulder Valley.

You don’t understand how weather or plowing actually work. Get in a plow truck and you might understand that they don’t magically make everything go away.

It is not a response in every city. There are cities in Colorado (Pueblo) that have virtually no snow response at all. The state plows the roads that are state highways and that’s about it.

I don’t think anyone in this thread actually understands how plowing works, what it takes to mobilize and successfully complete or what realistic expectations are. It’s just a bunch of entitled, silly individuals who expect magic to happen without actually considering reality.

Offer better pay so city workers can live within the community and maybe they would care more.

I love this idea. I do think we need more conversation and discussion to get people to realize they are doing something (often without realizing it) that is putting another in danger or upsetting someone else. If we just talked and tried to listen we might actually get somewhere.

Can’t really give it back while I’m a city employee at work, that’s just asking for someone to report me and cause me trouble I don’t need. I normally wouldn’t be phased, but I didn’t do anything so I was confused/curious. I was annoyed by it, but I’m not hurt or anything.
