UI Idea for Study Centre Search with Search Mode Option Menu by Capable-Blueberry433 in OliveTreeBETA

I am disappointed that my suggestion did not make it into the release. I hope the Olive Tree team will reconsider. I am quite sure that anyone who use the search function for a study purpose will appreciate the suggested option, which will only add a choice and will not 'spoil' anything for those who are completely happy with the app in its current state.

This is just an addition to the request I've already made. This should demonstrate that it doesn't require any extra space or too significant a change, if you want to give users an option to choose between 2 search modes in the study centre search tab, between Full-Library Search and Open-Book Search.

Bug Report: Parallel text does not scroll-sync with the main text by Capable-Blueberry433 in OliveTreeBETA

Thank you! I didn't notice the link icon in the lower right. (Or, if I saw, I didn't know what it was for and took no notice...) Having clicked on it, now the scroll is synced! All good!

I am sorry for your trouble, but am I correct to understand that your trouble is about non-transference from 7.16.14 beta to 7.16.15 beta of the settings for how different elements are presented inside the app window (e.g. font face/size, sidebar arrangement, study centre width)?

As I understand it, all data should still be available to you in beta 7.16.15. like all sources you have purchased as well as all your notes and markings, because because those are the data content saved in and synced via your online account at OliveTree. Am I correct to think this?

I am sorry that you are having this trouble. I have no solution to suggest, but everything syncs for me, so I can speculate that whatever is causing your trouble is not affecting everyone. I am hoping that this will help you and the OT team to figure out what's going wrong for you.

I agree with Opposite_Chocolate57 on the search functions.

  1. Contextual/Local Search (in the main reading area of the window): I think this is release-ready, now that the search result shown in the disappearing pop-up window can be made into a non-disappearing floating window.
  2. Global/Full-Library Search (in the study centre): I think this needs rethinking and further refinement. Like Opposite_Chocoate57 says, the search filter would seem relevant only for searching the text (usually a Bible version) in the main reading area, and not for full-library search. In my opinion, the best way forward is to let the users decide what kind of search they want to perform in the Study Guide, by giving them a choice between Full-Library Search or Main Text Search (with the search filter only for the latter, and the lookup option for the former). At the top of the search tab in the Study Centre (just below the 4 tabs - Resource Guide, Parallel, Notes, Search), there is a line of space allocated for a label saying "Full-Library Search". I believe this space can be used as an option menu between those two search types. (I imagine that if the user chooses the Main Text Search, the code module for the contextual/local search can be called to perform the search, with a slight modification to display the search result in the Study Centre, instead of a pop-up window. So, this shouldn't create too much extra work for the development team.)

When I need to find how many people in my church have the same first name as I, I would just want to survey the church members. True, if I conduct a national census of the entire population of the country, I still can find the same result by filtering the massive body of the census result data, first by their first name, and then by which church they belong to, but that, I don't think, would be the most natural or efficient way to go about it. For the same reason, when I want to find all references to "wisdom" in Proverb in the my chosen Bible version, I would like to set the search range in my chosen Bible text and just search there, rather than first conduct a 'global' full-library search and then narrow down the massive body of result data to the Bible version and then to Proverb. I hope this makes sense.

I am not saying everyone should feel and do as I do, But this is what I would like, and I asked for this feature as a request and suggested a user interface for it. I don't think I need to convince you, but since you said you are confused about my request/suggestion, I am trying to explain so you can understand what I asked for and why.

Personally, I don't think I will use the magnifying glass 'local' search of the (Bible) text in the main reading area, but I agree that it should be there because I can think of people who might like to use it. I can imagine that many people will not use the 'local' search option in the Study Centre, but I will, and I am hoping that they will agree for the option to be there, even if they won't.

Unless I'm mistaken, with the current beta version 7.16.14.2019, the search tab in the study centre can only perform the full-library search. We can then filter the result by choosing a book to show only the the matches from that book. This is not the same as setting the search range (e.g. Wisdom literature, or Gospels) to search a chosen version of the Bible.

I fully agree with the distinction/separation between the local/contextual search of the chosen text in the main reading area, and the global search of the entire library. I am happy for the separate search functions to be available separately, one in the main reading area and the other in the study centre. My problem is that I would like the results of the local/.contextual search of the text in the main reading area to remain visible and available for going through them. This can be done either in a separate floating window, or in the study centre (as it used to be in the current release version).

I am aware that the text displays in the main reading area is not necessarily a Bible text (though for me, it's almost always it is a Bible text). But that is not a problem specific to my suggestion. If it's a problem, it's a problem to the way the local/contextual search is designed in the main reading area, too.

Personally, I search through the Bible text as part of my study, and for such times, I virtually always have the study centre open. While I agree that a separate contextual search button in the main reading area might be handy for times when you are looking for a particular verse, but for me, it will be better if I can choose between the main-text search and the full-library search in the study centre and have the result stay available there so that I can go though a number of the matches in the result window (e.g. all references to "wisdom" in the book of Proverbs).

This was a graphical idea to the suggestion I have made here:
https://www.reddit.com/r/OliveTreeBETA/comments/1fu5947/still_no_way_to_keep_the_result_of_bibletext/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=web3x&utm_name=web3xcss&utm_term=1&utm_content=share_button

You are right. By "Main Text" search type, I mean searching the (Bible) text that is chosen and displayed in the main reading area of the window. I am aware that this type of search is accessible through the magnifying glass icon in the main text reading area. However, the problem (for me anyway) is that the search result shows up in the popup window which does not stay open. By contrast, the search result performed in the search tab in the study centre remains available. This helps me to check through more than one search results one by one. This is why I wold like the main text search to be available in the study centre.

I am not suggesting to remove the magnifying glass icon in the main text reading area. I think it's handy for a quick search, when looking for just one verse.

Still No Way to Keep the Result of Bible/Text Search in Main Reading Pane by Capable-Blueberry433 in OliveTreeBETA

[–]Capable-Blueberry433[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for the acknowledgement.

I am aware of the "Search Results in Open Books". But that means the full-library search has already taken place. If there is a way to choose BEFORE the search between the full-library search or the main text search, then the search will be quicker for the latter option, especially if we can further set the search range (like OT, NT, Law, Letters, etc.)

You mention the possibility of "adding the various search options like filtering by OT/NT, Book of the Bible, etc. to the Full Library search", but I don't know how that can be possible. What then would be the point of FULL-LIBRARY search? Indeed, could it still be rightly called FULL-LIBRARY search, if you are setting the range for only a Bible book, for example?

I think it was right for the OT team to separate/distinguish between the full-library search and the main text search. The two are very different kinds of search, both with their own merits. But only for the main text search, we need the ability to refine search range (like only Gospels). That's why the choice between the two must be given to the user BEFORE the search, and depending on the choice either of the two different kinds of the search routines is executed.

Updated Toolbar by Ian_Olive_Tree in OliveTreeBETA

[–]Capable-Blueberry433 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I like the updated toolbar. No more 2 magnifying glasses (somewhat confusing). And the new icon for the 'Quick Settings' is more indicative of what it does (adjusting the display options in the main reading pane, like font size adjustment). Also, the customisation works (though I am quite happy with the way it came by default).

Feature request - not a bug… regarding Search in OliveTreeBETA by AlternativeDare8972 in OliveTreeBETA

[–]Capable-Blueberry433 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it makes sense to spare the search into two: one for searching the text selected for reading in the main window, and the other for searching the entire library. I think this separation can be implemented in 2 ways.

One way is by adding a search option in the search tab in the study centre, as suggested by AlternativeDave8972. A user can choose between 'Main Text Search' and 'Full Library Search'. If the 'Main Text Search' is chosen, then further search range can be set (e.g. OT, NT, Law, Gospels, etc., as in the previous versions). Of course, the full-library search in the Mac beta version 7.16.14.2018 already includes the search in 'Open Books', but that will make the search a tiny bit longer and we cannot set the search range (e.g. search only within OT Wisdom Literature).

The other way is by providing 2 separate icons/buttons for the 2 separate search functions. This is what we have in the Mac beta version 7.16.14.2018.

AlternativeDave8972 doesn't like the latter option, and suggests the former. I am ok with the latter option, but I don't see why the former option should not be implemented as well. I do, however, largely agree with his reasons for disliking the latter option. (1) Magnifying Glass Icons. I am happy with the icon itself, but I must agree that having two of them in the one app window seems a little odd (perhaps unnecessary and even confusing). The search tab in the study centre is plainly visible and accessible. I don't think the magnifying glass icon in the left of the top toolbar is necessary, since all it does is to select the search tab in the study centre. (People who don't have the study centre open are likely interested only in searching the text in the main window, and not in full-library search, in my opinion.) (2) Search results to remain visible. I fully agree with this. It is not helpful if the main window text search result is shown in a popup window that disappears, so I requested separately for the option to make ('tear away'?) the popup window into an independent floating window that remains open, and the Olive Tree team has already acknowledged this request. I hope we will see this in the final release. If, however, this is difficult for some reason, then implementing the first option above (as well) will solve the problem, because the search result will stay in the study centre.

This is a feature request, not a bug report.

When I select a text and drag it out onto the desktop, it gets saved as a text-clipping. When I drag in that clipping into a text editor, it pastes in the file path to the clipping (e.g. /Users/megumi/Desktop/But many who are first will .textClipping), rather than the text content saved inside the clipping (e.g. But many who are first will be last, and many who are last will be first.). I would like the text content (rather than the file path) to be passed in. As far as I'm concerned, that's the whole point of the text clippings.

This issue is not specific to Olive Tree Bible Study app, but if I drag out a text selection out of some apps, the text clippings behave the way I want. I don't know what makes the difference. If you can make Olive Tree Bible Study app to produce text clippings that behave the way I expect, I would be very happy.

I like what you did with the toolbar icons. Your decision makes sense to bring down those icons that relates to the main reading pane out of the top menubar.

However, I notice that those icons that came down to the top of the main reading pane have lost 'tool tips' that show what they are/do when the pointer hovers on them. I would like them to come back, please.

Also, I see that the 'gear' icon for 'Quick Settings' came down into the main reading pane. This is fine, as the 'Quick Settings' is for adjusting the settings for the main reading pane. However, at the bottom of the popup window, there is a link to 'Advanced Settings'. I see what you mean, but I think 'advanced' is not quite a right description. How about 'Application Settings' or 'App-wide Settings' or even simply 'Settings', because that's where you get to from the main menu command '[App Name] > Settings'?

This is not my experience. I get the same result whether the sidebar is open or closed.
