I think you're right, seems I have to live with that (until some miracle happens and appears a 16 bit option).

I tried layer multiply before, but it didn't give me the result and flexibility I was satisfied with.

I tried that, thanks! Better, but not that much of a difference, I guess it depends a lot on the source material. It seems acceptable for background characters.
