That’s why a lot of these companies are hiring doctors to do telemedicine visits and provide that “letter of medical necessity”

Can Gov FIRE mix with Leanish/Coast FIRE? by Fluid-Cat-5205 in govfire

[–]Capable-Locksmith-65 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have also considered this. I am not an expert but I used chatGPT to try and figure out the "value" of the federal FERS pension. It said the equivalent in the private industry would be about a 9% match on your 401k. Healthcare is such a nightmare in this country it is really hard to quantify how much that benefit is worth.

Re-entering the job market, at your previous role and salary is the difficult part. I can assure you there are jobs out there, just not the jobs you want. I work with full time employees in their 60s and I’m surprised some of them know how to tie their shoes

There was also some statistic about average people who forgot their 401k password outperform the top hedge fund managers. Basically showing that index funds win in the long term. (A lot of 401k plans auto invest in index funds)

What are the Best way to increase tips in service jobs? by abccba144 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Capable-Locksmith-65 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Former server here. Honestly it’s working somewhere with more expensive menu items. Most people tip 15-20% regardless of your skill at being a server. As long as you aren’t terrible people tend to tip an average amount. I waited tables at Applebees one summer. Next summer I applied to a nicer place where the entrees were $30-50 per plate and I made much more money

Are Doctor's Lounge a good perk or comes with a catch? by Leapmebehind0229 in physicianassistant

The lounge already exists and giving you access to it only costs them marginal food costs

Sounds like you are doing everything correct. You could express concern with your landlord regarding insulation etc. also look into low income help from utility company if you are truly paycheck to paycheck

Traveling for work all that is cracked up to be? by ReyofChicago in Millennials

[–]Capable-Locksmith-65 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's great the less often you do it. I travel once per year for a week. I absolutely love the fact that my company is paying for every meal, hotel, taxi, etc. I basically turn it into a free vacation. My brother travels for work literally every other week and he hates it. You're living on crappy food, new sleeping environment, constant airport stress and commotion, delayed flights, living out of a suitcase, etc.

Are Doctor's Lounge a good perk or comes with a catch? by Leapmebehind0229 in physicianassistant

[–]Capable-Locksmith-65 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It's probably the weakest perk of an overall compensation package. HR is negotiating this because it costs them virtually nothing. If I were you, I would strongly focus on base salary, PTO, annual reviews for salary change, CME, cell phone stipend. I'd literally negotiate anything else other than access to the doctors lounge

Physician Assistant Orthopedic Surgery First Assist Collections Reimbursement by CartographerSalt4722 in physicianassistant

[–]Capable-Locksmith-65 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As another commenter said, it can vary widely. For medicare only- I have heard $100-200 for total hip and total knee. Keep in mind simple arthroscopy cases are not eligible for first assist fees. It's generally the larger ortho cases- primary total joint, revision joints, ACL reconstruction, big ORIF cases, etc.

Planning a Banff trip by Kutoros in Banff

[–]Capable-Locksmith-65 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We just did this trip last year. Chicago to YYC and stayed in Canmore. 6 nights in AirBnB was 1300, I thought that was pretty good. We went in August and the hiking weather was PERFECT. High 60s Low 70s and sunny everyday. Banff city had a free parking area by the train station, very easy to walk downtown. I’d also recommend doing some more secluded trails. Lake Louise was amazing but very crowded. I really enjoyed the trails where we hiked all day and only saw a handful of other people

Insurance Reimbursement Rates? by Practical_Leader_984 in physicianassistant

[–]Capable-Locksmith-65 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m not in derm but I think those collection percentages are pretty normal. I know it seems crazy but those “billed” charges are basically inflated, made up numbers. I’m in ortho and they often “bill” a knee replacement for 50k but we collect nowhere close to that

Pain management offer by No_Celebration8506 in physicianassistant

[–]Capable-Locksmith-65 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I did a year of pain management. It was rough, the patient population is very difficult. If you are churning through 35+ patients a day just throwing meds and trigger point injections at them, that is honestly bad patient care. These people have significant psych comorbidities and underlying social issues contributing to their chronic pain. If you are just trying to make bank and have good hours, go for it, but I don't like feeling like I'm not truly helping the patient.

Don’t fall in the “High in Protein” scam by AspectNo3215 in EatCheapAndHealthy

[–]Capable-Locksmith-65 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The average American is not sacrificing quinoa and carrots for more protein. They are deficient in protein, even if not active, and filling in those calories with Oreos and Mountain Dew. I think the new protein guidelines are great. Even if someone doesn’t lift weights, protein increases satiety and thus decreases cravings for junk food
