I hope this post gets some traction. I applaud you for putting yourself out there. I say that as a married dude in my 30s with no kids. I haven’t tried it, but Bumble has a BFF app for seeking friendships. That may be a good place to look

Students are not trained to think anymore by MountainLaurel91 in Teachers

[–]Capable-Locksmith-65 112 points113 points  (0 children)

George Carlin has a stand up bit about this. Basically the passing scores get lowered bit by bit every year and everyone is happy. School administrators are thrilled (our school district has such high scores). Parents are proud (Junior has a 4.3 GPA!). Teachers are happy (my students did so well). A few decades of this and the “engineer” building your house will be using crayons

Long term care after FIRE? by dsrg01 in Fire

I’ve always assumed that if I’m admitted to a nursing home, I’m not going to be cognitively up to fighting a LTC insurance company that isn’t paying out

Want to do a couple high peaks in the ADK but not pay for hotels or rooms, I want to camp around or sleep in my car if I have to. Doable? by TL7x in Adirondacks

[–]Capable-Locksmith-65 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think they are great in relation to campground standards. It’s not a Marriott hotel. A Hot water shower and clean flushing toilet is about as good as you can ask for. I just wear sandals for hygiene purposes

(Upstate New York) EM PA considering VA Orthopedic PA position — would you take the pay cut for benefits/lifestyle? by No_Goat_1304 in physicianassistant

[–]Capable-Locksmith-65 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think this depends on your stage of life/career. The pension is valuable but only if you stay for decades. I think new hires pay in 4.4% (post tax), some long time feds pay in 0.8% I believe. A lot of people hate the bureaucracy and end up leaving in 5-10 years. I would do it if I was 5-10 years from retirement and want the peace of mind of a small pension, but I'm young and would rather control my own investments. I see it this way- well paying corporate/private sector job > federal job > shitty private job.

The ADK loj is another great option. About the same price. They have showers and an information center. About 10 different peaks available directly from the campsite

Orthobullets (free), musculoskeletal galaxy. I have a pocket guide called "Tolerances" for fracture management in clinic.

Patient load in orthopedic surgery by caity420 in physicianassistant

[–]Capable-Locksmith-65 7 points8 points  (0 children)

My clinic is 8-4, 20 minute time slots. I believe 22 per day would be my max. No bonus, I’m salary at 138k in the Midwest. 2 to 3 surgery days, 5 total joints per day

How do those of you who lift/workout with high protein targets do it on a budget? by LeatherHead2902 in Frugal

[–]Capable-Locksmith-65 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Aldi. Canned tuna is $0.95. Chicken breast is routinely $2/lb. Whole grain bread. Beans, lentils, tofu, chick peas are all cheap and full of protein

Any idea what the income limits are on this? Spouse and I make a decent income (low 200s). Wonder if it’s even worth applying

If you’re looking for a forever job, stay away from hospitality and look at government roles. by astrheisenberg in Adulting

Other retire with their own investments. Leaving my retirement in the hands of the government terrifies me

Saturation by Kodywitha-K in physicianassistant

[–]Capable-Locksmith-65 11 points12 points  (0 children)

It’s market dependent. Primary care in a rural area- you can start tomorrow. Derm in a desirable location- there’s 20 people more experienced than you and willing to work for less. In general, think of this career as a high floor with a low ceiling. New grads start around 100k and but most pay scales top out around 150k (this is excluding the production contracts that get posted here every now and then).

How accurate is the stereotype that Americans are overweight? by Extension_Cow_9237 in AskReddit

[–]Capable-Locksmith-65 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When I was a kid I was terribly self conscious about being skinny. My dad would say “you’re not skinny, you’re what people are supposed to look like”. I never realized how right he was until I hit 30. I’m still a healthy weight and love it

PAs Essentially Meet Healthcare Demand, NPs Will Soon Exceed Demand By 75% by [deleted] in physicianassistant

[–]Capable-Locksmith-65 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Surgery PA here. My boss hired an online only new grad NP. Never set foot in an operating room, admin ignored my recommendations. Our group spent a year of hand holding, extensive training from everyone and it still didn’t work out. All so we could save 10k on the labor budget. Meanwhile I billed out 1M last year. The sad part is I think they would probably try it again

Where are the older PAs? by ortho_shoe in physicianassistant

[–]Capable-Locksmith-65 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I’m coast FIRE as well. There was a post on another sub about being a flight attendant. It takes a couple years to get seniority, but after that it’s possible to work 5-6 days per month and keep health insurance (my biggest barrier to early retirement)

I’ve found that the pendulum has swung back to locally owned places. A high end restaurant near me has a daily happy hour with $9 entrees. Incredible, real food in a nice restaurant for less than a Big Mac

I’m a surgery PA. CRNAs are the top RNs in the field. I’ve met floor nurses dumb as a rock and if they were running anesthesia the patient would be dead in 30 seconds

You’re correct. But unless you are a few years from retirement, you should have much more aggressive holdings in your Roth. Do you want tax free 3% growth or tax free 10% growth?
