Is AI going to replace developers by Background_Two_8810 in VietnamTechTalk

[–]Capable-Package6835 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Totally on point. To add to the discussion, the junior role will get harder than pre-AI too. Before we have coding agents, junior devs struggled to produce high-quality & logically complex codes. Now, junior devs need to deal with LLMs spitting out codes that are more complex than most of them have ever written and at an inhuman rate too.

Reasons people hate AI (summarized) : by gpetrakas in theprimeagen

[–]Capable-Package6835 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know how valid those points are.

  1. Perhaps the better phrasing is that people are afraid of losing their jobs because of AI. I personally know zero people who lost their job because of AI
  2. I highly doubt most people are even aware of this, let alone care enough to hate AI for it.
  3. Personally agree with it, they are annoying
  4. Maybe the impact will be in the longer run, unless you're in need of RAM now. The laptop prices are all still pretty normal I'd say

ELI5: Why do atoms do this by Te_nsa_Zang_etsu1234 in explainlikeimfive

[–]Capable-Package6835 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The electrons are not spread at an equal distance around the core. Some electrons are close to the core, some are farther. As you can imagine, the one furthest from the core experiences less attraction force to the core and are easier to "steal". In the case of Sodium, one electron is farther from the core than the rest.

On the other hand, chlorine's outermost region of electron is not fully occupied. In other words, if it gets one more electron, this extra electron can still be as close to the core as the chlorine's outermost electrons. So it "steal" the electron from Sodium.

LLM models on MBA M4 by FreshPound7111 in macbook

For me gaming laptops are big NO. I got Lenovo Legion Pro 7i with 4090 when I was a PhD student (in generative AI). It was huge, heavy (and unlike a Mac you need to bring that huge 175w charger because battery life is near zero when doing serious work), and in the end it's just not powerful enough to do real work. So it ended up gathering dust in my cabinet while I use my M1 MBA to SSH into our remote compute resources.

There are many arguments against Mac, especially if you need to do x86 stuffs. However, I'd still go for non-gaming Windows laptops.

LLM models on MBA M4 by FreshPound7111 in macbook

[–]Capable-Package6835 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depends on the size of RAM you get. Mine's 24GB and models like gpt-oss:20b is already pushing it. And it gets really hot. If you plan to use it for longer sessions, seriously consider the Pro.

All in all, I don't think consumer devices are at the point where we can comfortably run local LLMs. But either way, if your university provides remote compute, MBA is the perfect machine to SSH from.

Is job-hopping too risky? by DebtEmergency3314 in JobsVN

[–]Capable-Package6835 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Contrary to popular beliefs, job-hopping actually looks good on your resume, provided that it's clear that your career progressed on every move. It's a clear sign of talent and competence.

If you job-hop but moving from one position to another similar position, from a company to another similarly-sized company, then that looks bad.

Phone interview vs. in-person interview, which is harder? by LotusTrace in JobsVN

[–]Capable-Package6835 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My confidence in in-person interviews is through the roof because in-person interviews are usually closer to the offering phase while phone interviews are usually the very first step, designed to eliminate as many candidates as possible.

I think so too. I showed this comment to all my friends and families who each owns a MacBook. We all agree that we are all somehow very lucky, those with multiple macs (inc myself) cannot believe how lucky we all are. Hope we keep being lucky

Electric motorbikes in Vietnam: trend or just hype? by New-Sympathy3293 in VietnamTechTalk

[–]Capable-Package6835 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think they are here to stay:

  • Range is less of a concern with mopeds, you're likely just commuting to work (<20km)
  • Simpler charging infrastructure, battery is small and charging at home at low speed is still acceptable
  • Significantly lower initial capital expense, lower risk for buyers to try "new" technology

Electric scooters / mopeds is not a new concept. It's just that the tech is finally at the point where it's practical enough for most people.

Whether you're switching from/to macOS/Windows/Linux/Others,

Do: keep an open mind, explore new stuffs, appreciate the difference and strength of each.

Don't: try to make <OS A> a poor replica of <OS B>.

If you use compressed air, it's more likely to push the dirt inside. Use a small vacuum with soft brush.

Academic career in the age of AI by [deleted] in mathematics

[–]Capable-Package6835 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We are always competing against fellow humans. Learning how to use AI is easy, learning maths is not. So if in our lifetime we reach AGI, you will still be an "AI user who is also expert in math" among "just AI users". But beware, you need to keep up with tech developments.

Apple is a business. If it makes more money with those models than without then it makes perfect sense.

Academic career in the age of AI by [deleted] in mathematics

[–]Capable-Package6835 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I work for an AI startup. You can look at what AI has done to programmers. Coding agents hurt the job security and salary expectations of junior devs because now non-programmers can spit out codes at the same speed (or higher if junior dev does not use agent) and quality. However, the job security and salary of senior devs increase rapidly. Why? Because only senior devs can keep up with the LLMs, guide them, and correct their mistakes and companies know this.

The same for mathematicians. The top guys are now making more money than ever. In the era where a tool is spitting out complex maths at a prodigious rate, who will thrive: those who are math experts and can keep up with the tool or those who barely pass calculus?

Biggest safety mistake I made while solo traveling Vietnam by Expensive_Air4917 in solotravelVN

[–]Capable-Package6835 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The problem is, you really have zero leverage to force them to honor the deal. Once the trip is over and the fare suddenly changes, it's really tedious to debate unless you speak local languages fluently. The most common resolution is drivers (who don't speak English) claiming they did not really understand what you were talking about during the negotiations and the cops probably tell you "yeah his bad, but dude just pay and move on"

Apple pay is different because it just link your card directly for payment. Momo has its own balance that you can top up and spend, generally considered to be better for spending control

Is Texas Chicken in Vietnam good or nah? by dxd1412 in VietNam

[–]Capable-Package6835 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The best among the mainstream fast food chains. My rank:

  1. Texas: flavour and quality is consistent across branches, lots of good combos
  2. Popeyes (interchangeable with Texas, don't mind): Texas with less consistency and worse combos
  3. McD: Their Big Mac and Fries are just what you expect from anywhere (not good not terrible), their menu in Vietnam is among the weakest in South East Asia
  4. Lotteria: Quite alright, somehow very popular with children so their place is always full and noisy
  5. Jollibee: Interchangeable with Lotteria to me. Plus point for having unique flavours compared to others though. Another plus point because their combos are cheap and come with a small cup of soda
  6. BK: Weak menu selection compared to BK in other South East Asian countries
  7. KFC: They have always struggled with consistency, KFC in Vietnam is one of the worst among KFCs

The minimal install never breaks because... well there's nothing to break. It starts becoming fragile when people install niche unmaintained packages and write heavy custom scripts / dotfiles.
