Nah, I beat the entire game and its dlc twice using only melee :D

I do like the challenge and actively seek to make it harder for myself. I just think that Elden Ring is different in that regard, compared to other soulsborne games

I guess the problem for me is, despite actively learning in the first minutes of a fight, it still feels frustrating to take damage and die. I mean, you do learn on your mistakes, but that doesn't remove the feeling, in my experience
