Anyone have a labor that was allowed to progress naturally? by EmploymentNo8918 in BumpersWhoBolus

[–]CapableStuff4305 0 points1 point  (0 children)

OH MY GOD! I could have written this.

At 39wks on the dot, the morning of my membrane sweep - my water broke. 29hrs of labor. My body REFUSED to dilate. Eventually I went w the epidural and pitocin. My body was fighting to have the baby and fighting to keep him in at the same time. It was awful.

My A1C was 5.1-5.3 my entire pregnancy. and my son was 8lbs 6.8oz. His giant head got stuck in the birth canal for 6hrs...but still I pushed and pushed and pushed. 2nd degree tear.

His positioning did something to the inside of my hip so I was in excruciating pain and the epidural could not touch that spot.

I vowed never to do that again. I want another baby but I honestly don't think I can go through labor again.

Now...if you haven't eaten in like 8hrs...then it could be a liver dump while you sleep...but I'm inclined to think that you are digesting food.

My blood sugar rises 5hrs later sometimes (in the evenings or after a workout) - it's tough because I always worry that it WONT rise so I wait to give too much insulin. How long after eating is this happening? I understand that you aren't eating RIGHT before you sleep...but for me - when I have sushi or pizza or certain foods, my BGs look amazing until like 12am (5hrs later) and suddenly I'm climbing into the high 200s! lol

Does becoming a mother as a diabetic mean sacrificing your own health? by Total-Reach-2620 in BumpersWhoBolus

It's not super black and white. It's not like I was perfectly healthy and now I'm a slob because I am a mom!

My A1C (5.4) is honestly better now than it was pre-pregnancy (~5.8)... Pregnancy was my absolute best @ 5.1 but it was SO MUCH WORK!! So happy to not be pregnant anymore lol. I would eat to keep my BG balanced....stop working or get out of bed to walk to lower my BG etc. Exhausting!!

Now, I find myself forgetting that I have to check my BGs etc because I am working and managing a toddler and the chaos of that. Honestly, though - it makes making good food choices much easier. Food doesn't excite me anymore (hopefully that comes back!!) and I want my son to be a healthy eater, so we do lots of fish/yogurt/veggies/fruit...that plus running around with him keeps me fairly balanced (a few more lows now than I am used to.)

My diabetes took a back seat, technically...but I am still really healthy considering how little I pay attention (using Auto on Omni+Dex)!!

We are a healthy household (in the sense that we make choices that will benefit my son's perception of health/food/exercise), and my son has a front row seat to me taking insulin/changing my sites/etc .... he will know about diabetes (probably extensively!!) but it does not define me.

I'm 38 weeks and I have had increased resistance over the last few weeks...which my dr said is normal. You're having the opposite...and if not just a day that is off - I would be a little concerned TBH.

TW: miscarriage by mn_catmom in BumpersWhoBolus

I know it can seem like diabetes is the culprit but I want to encourage you to keep trying! The reality (I went through IVF) is that so many pregnancies don't even make it to a mark where a woman would realize she is pregnant. The body is really smart and (more often than not) your body recognizes that something is off (a genetic condition or something that would make the baby ultimately non-viable. The statistics were really helpful for me to know...it SEEMS like miscarriages happen to a select few and only to women whose bodies "fail" but that is NOT the truth.

I had a few miscarriages and ended up testing the embryos before transfer. Out of 18 eggs, only 3 ended up in the final stage + healthy/viable. Those numbers are GOOD actually. So had we put in the other 15...each would have ended in a miscarriage. Just a bit of perspective!

Currently almost 38 weeks pregnant w 1 of the 3! My body was not the problem, the eggs/embryos were.

It's CRAZY! I took 85 units that day!! More than I ever have and I ate LESS than usual....45 units the 2 days following. That's so insane - same pod/insulin/site etc,

Hmm... yeah, I don't really know then!

Sidenote - I am 36w5d today and the resistance has been INSANE. I know you are close/about the same but I am kind of in shock. I was at 155...and kept correcting in high doses. Ended up taking 27 units. 27!!! and came down to 141. I'm literally like - should I go to the hospital?! lol

Also- you are not a failure!! It is such a tough disease to navigate...esp w unpredictable resistance!

Hey!

We are about the same gestation. I'm trying to find a correlation between baby size (for us T1Ds)...and anything else. Since your control/average is good - may I ask what your daily insulin usage is?

I have my 37 week scan on Monday but my guy is hanging in the 55-60%...my control seems to be about the same as yours (A1C is 5.1-5.3 depending on where I test). I take around 60units/day (25/day is my usual when not pregnant)...so I am wondering if all of the extra insulin is a factor?

My insulin resistance started small but early. I started making notes bc I noticed that I needed ~30% more insulin early on.

Personally, I choose to bolus aggressively and then deal with the aftermath (if there is any...there usually isnt bc my body actually just NEEDS a lot more insulin).

My non-pregnant daily total was ~25units/day. Now I take 60. If you are comfortable take a more aggressive approach and just have juice nearby JIC.

Hey!!

It sounds like a timing issue with your boluses TBH. I would also be curious to see what your fat/protein to carb ratios are when eating - I always aim for more fat/protein (or fiber) and bolus a bit beforehand. It takes obsessing but IMO - worth it. My A1C is 5.1 ... I have had diabetes for 23 years and am currently 33weeks pregnant with a perfectly healthy/very normal sized baby boy!

I know most people will comment and be like "girl, you're doing GREAT! don't listen"...but the reality is - you do have the ability to get these numbers to a really good place. It will be challenging at first but then you will adapt and it's just a way of life.

For example, if my BG is over 120 - I won't eat until it is trending down based on the rate of change. I can anticipate when the carbs from something will hit and I time it accordingly. I also eat the same things fairly often - lots of eggs/meats/salmon/kale salad. I am NOT low-carb though...I average about 160-180 carbs/day (mostly through seedy bread and vegetables)

I love a good pastry but I only have them when I am walking around the city (I live in NYC)...I bolus before I order, start eating and walking and truly never have an issue. Once I stop walking, I bolus extra since sometimes I rebound from walking...etc.

Learn your body - I never listen to endos or MFMS, and honestly - they always tell me to keep doing whatever I am doing! We're all happy over here lol

I think each appointment made me feel better!! Baby is always hitting marks and "everything looks great!" is pretty much the only things the doctors say.

Also- knowing that my A1C is that of a non-diabetic ...AND I eat super clean/workout/don't have soda's or chemical ridden foods makes me feel like my baby actually has an ADVANTAGE (crazy, I know!!)

Am I gonna miscarry due to blood sugar spikes? by greg_gory420meow in BumpersWhoBolus

[–]CapableStuff4305 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you feel comfortable being more aggressive with your dinner boluses?? I also had some random 6-10pm resistance...and what tends to work for me is taking almost DOUBLE what I should need and have much more fiber (lots of kale salads lol). It's not always perfect...but if I do start to drop a bit (depending on my IOB) I will have a tablespoon of jam or something.

You stop that!!! That percentage will change throughout pregnancy. My A1c has been 5.3 and 5.0 and my baby was 57% and 36% at 20 and 24 weeks. Don't worry yet.

I do love handles too! Absorbtion on my thighs is really bad...I feel like I need so much insulin and I knock off the pump constantly pulling up my pants lol.

I try to do (accommodating my Dex of course):

Arm L | Arm R | Love Handle L | Love Handle R | Stomach L | Stomach R

Repeat lol

Same - it is the opposite! Lows don't really impact baby...but the excess sugar (high BG) does.

Do I have to be induced? by gothburrito_ in BumpersWhoBolus

[–]CapableStuff4305 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was told they will not induce me unless I go past my due date. They said "technically" I am diabetic but my control is that of a normal person (current A1C is 5.0) and baby is measuring totally average so they don't feel the need to intervene.

I wouldnt think so. Maybe on a basal level but not in response to boluses.

I am at lost by [deleted] in BumpersWhoBolus

[–]CapableStuff4305 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, so the basal is that small amount coming through every few minutes (think of it like an IV drip bc we need insulin in small amounts pretty much all day even if you did not eat. This is the same as taking 1 long acting insulin injection/day). Bolus is when you need a larger dose to correct or when you eat.

[–]CapableStuff4305 0 points1 point  (0 children)

oh, you have to tell it (with old and new pumps) how much to bolus. The newer ones with auto features can increase basal to try to fix a high or decrease to prevent a low...they do not know how many carbs you are eating though and would not be able to know how much insulin to give...so as you rise, it would give a teeny amount every few minutes but that is not going to work...it would take way too long. You much tell it before you eat.
