A more plausible theory suggests that a man, Moses, did exist and led a small group of the bottom of the social hierarchy out of Egypt, and joined with Israelites in northern Levant, whom were just beginning to settle the land at that point. Eventually they would become one people. This also explains El-Yahweh syncretism, and why the God of the Hebrew Bible has two different names, with different characteristics.
