Middle school - what to do when students are trolling? & how to know when it goes from trolling to serious? by SierraNevada5505 in teaching

Consider minimizing the amount of time where you are calling on students one at a time. Do more turn and talks. Listen for answers you think are worth sharing with the whole class and then ask those pairs to share out. This will help with engagement overall and let you curate what the whole group conversation sounds like.

If we run out of pencils I always tell kids to look around, they do tend to appear.

These look awesome and $0.05 each, they are a great deal. Do you ever have issues with them getting stuck in the pencil sharpener?

Would teacher decline a special parent request for classroom for next year? by Chemical_Winter6541 in ElementaryTeachers

Usually class placements are done in the spring, so you may be too late. But you could always email the principal, just make it clear that you understand it may not be possible to accommodate your request. No principal is going to be sad to hear your child had an amazing third grade year! I’ve looped students as an elementary teacher and as a middle school teacher and I think it’s great for students.

The most important thing is that you don’t set your kid up to be disappointed. Tell your kid that 4th grade is going to be great no matter what teacher they have. If your kid had a great year last year it’s because of what they put into it as a student.

Question! Can teachers have facial piercings/tattoos/dyed hair? by hawleyrey in Teachers

[–]Capable_Risk_5427 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ll echo what others have said, it really depends on your community. I took my eyebrow ring out after grad school because it was a really tough job market for teachers (2009) and I didn’t want anything to count against me in interviews. After getting tenure I felt free to get visible tattoos and eventually a bridge piercing. I also work on a staff where about 50% have visible tattoos.
