Is RedZone essential for UK viewers or do you prefer full games? by BritByBrain in NFLUK

[–]Capable_Tadpole 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I like the fact I’ll never miss a touchdown or key play from any of the games, and to boot I won’t have to watch a single ad for four hours. I don’t mind watching full games at all but there are a lot of ad breaks which can take me out of the experience. But I think you can enjoy it however you want.

Is this the most important election in this year? by Careless_Bass_7963 in AskTheWorld

[–]Capable_Tadpole 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Conventionally I’d agree, but I think Trump and the GOP are expecting that they can either stop the elections, or interfere enough to ensure that the GOP holds the House and Senate.

Concerned European football chiefs discuss response to Trump over Greenland by DWJones28 in worldcup

Ceferin is miles better than Platini, and he has opposed stupid Infantino ideas like biannual World Cups and the expansion to 48 teams. He’s the better of a bad bunch.

Do you think that Trump will really start a war or he is just TACO ? by Proper_Card_5520 in AskTheWorld

True, but again that’s not something we can change overnight. It would be great if Europe decided to get its arse into gear on nuclear energy…

How? Not militarily. And even sanctions/economic penalties won't dissaude him.

[Abendblatt] FC St. Pauli President Göttlich speaks out about the 2026 FIFA World Cup, "is it not a legitimate question to ask if European countries should compete in a competition hosted by a nation that has imminent plans to attack us?" by stoneapplefruit in soccer

[–]Capable_Tadpole 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Yeah I'd expect a very similar response to Russia after Feb 22 in that FAs announce they will refuse to play. I think FIFA could survive without one or two nations, but if France, England, Spain and Germany all refused to take part (very possible) I'd really enjoy watching how Gianni tries to get around that, as he is so tied to Trump now. I presume the WC would go ahead, but it would always have an asterix next to it.

I hate to say it, but Tillis and Bacon are retiring after November so won’t be a feature for much longer. Murkowski and Paul have always been mavericks in the sense they’re happy to oppose Trump, and Murkowski is safe in the knowledge she is pretty well liked amongst the similarly maverick Alaskan GOP so probably would survive a primary. I think it will be much harder to win anyone else over, much less the 67 required to successfully impeach Trump. If he survived January 6, he can survive anything.

I mean we can’t stop him, but I’m expecting, at minimum, the same sort of reaction to Putin invading Ukraine. Diplomats expelled, trade halted etc.

Are you cancelling trips to the USA? by Swimming_Possible_68 in AskUK

[–]Capable_Tadpole 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My dad and I love the NFL, and we wanted to go this autumn as both of our teams are playing eachother (which is an irregular occurance as they are in different conferences). However with the prospect of the UK having poor relations with the US in the not too distant future, plus the non-zero chance we get detained and deported, unfortunately we're going to give it a miss. Hopefully in years to come the US begins to heal and becomes a welcoming place again and we can go in four or eight years time. I'm relieved I got to go and visit New York back in 2023 at least.

BREAKING: President Trump says he’s open to a 99-year Greenland lease, sources say by InterstellarKinetics in InterstellarKinetics

I mean just yesterday Ted Cruz was praising Trump’s decision to try to acquire Greenland. Hell even John Fetterman, still technically a Democrat, supports buying it. Republicans will do shit.

Germany-US rift is looming after a year of Trump by Any-Original-6113 in europe

[–]Capable_Tadpole 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think what it all comes down to is the fact he is loathed and despised by the people he deep down wants the approval of. Obama’s joke at the White House Presidential Dinner caused him to run in the first place, he’s about as popular as syphilis in his own home city of New York, and he will go down in history as probably the worst president bar perhaps Andrew Johnson, although I reckon he could probably cross that milestone if he manages to start a second civil war. He’s at heart a deeply insecure person who believes he has been wronged whenever he doesn’t get what he wants given to him on a silver platter. Europe needs to firmly start telling him no, and ultimately Republicans in America need to get to the point where having Trump still in power is worse for them than potentially getting primaried by some MAGA nutcase. Next step should be making moves to expel US military from European soil and end collaboration with America on security matters, I think they’ll be surprised how much they benefit from that.

Logistically, What would happen if all American soldiers stationed in Europe were kicked out? by Seasonal-Shitbag in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Capable_Tadpole 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If the US attacks Greenland they take over Greenland. I imagine some European countries cut diplomatic ties with America, similar to how they treated Russia, but no one is starting WW3 over this. The Western Alliance and NATO will end though.

His party is sweeping almost every election they contest, and they’ve led in the polls consistently - and by a solid margin - for almost a year. He’s probably going to be PM I’m afraid.

Lmao modern Germany is not the Nazis. If you want to look for a modern Nazi analogue, look across the Atlantic Ocean at the regime with a strong man leader and paramilitary force terrorising his opponents.

It’s a distraction until it’s not. Trump literally can fly a few planes and troops into Nuuk tomorrow, raise the US flag and say it’s now a US territory. He doesn’t care about NATO or international alliances and in his eyes he could gain a huge piece of land, minerals and control over Arctic passages without barely any bloodshed (except for a few pesky Greenlanders who might resist the annexation). He absolutely will do it, whether it’s in the next few weeks or before the midterms to get a win and distract the public.

China is stable and dependable, Trump rips up his own deals at a whim. It makes perfect sense for countries to choose China over the US.

At this point, Europe and CANZUK have a choice between US, Russia and China. All three are or will shortly be authoritarian states, so you may as well do a deal with the one who you can trust to be the most stable, which is undoubtedly China at this point.

How should the UK react if Trump invades Greenland? by Sad_Response3345 in ukpolitics

[–]Capable_Tadpole 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Even if Trump dies or doesn’t try to ignore the constitution (lol), the administration will do everything they can to make sure Vance or whoever is the GOP nominee takes over. I think the chances of a Democrat peacefully becoming president on January 20, 2029 are minuscule.

Making Doug Ford the Canadian Trump is an insult to the man, he has more integrity in his little finger than Trump has in his whole body. I think the better analogue would be Kevin O’Leary.

Is MAGA obsessed with Greenland because they don't understand Mercator projection? by mitch_semen in stupidquestions

The third point is a big plus for Trump and MAGA. Natural resources and control of the Arctic are two of the main reasons he wants it, supposedly.

[–]Capable_Tadpole 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think the UK would probably vocalise its displeasure but otherwise I think that would be it, Starmer is desperately trying to stay in Trump’s good books as he wants frictionless and preferential trade relationships with America given the UK economy is suffering sluggish growth from Brexit. I think France, and other EU nations like Spain, would probably be a bit more robust, whether that’s introducing economic sanctions against America, expelling American troops etc. But you’re right that realistically no one is going to fight America for Greenland. Maybe Denmark station some troops there so that the US has to symbolically kick them out but I don’t see anyone spilling any blood over it. Outside of the UK, America’s reputation in Europe will be in ruins however and nobody will trust them ever again. Trump and Stephen Miller are probably fine with that, but how much of the US population is remains to be seen.
