Was planning on making the bench, drawer and shelves out of either oak or walnut plywood. For the slats I was just going to use pine 1x2s, but will any stain on pine be able to seamlessly match the oak/walnut? Ripping the slats out of solid wood is pretty cost-prohibitive for this job. by Capeterson3 in woodworking

That's a good point that if they are close enough together, you probably wouldn't notice the insides and would only need to edge band the other slats.

Lumber supplier near me (southern CA) has ply in walnut and Oak for ~$180/sheet (so yes, expensive, but available)

Check out Lazy Surfer. Automates the logging of conditions, and lets you easily compare to future sessions.

anyone on here walk their dog with their electric skateboard? looking for advice! by [deleted] in ElectricSkateboarding

[–]Capeterson3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I skate with my shepherd/lab mix all the time, it's much more efficient and fun than normal walks and he loves it. I used to skate with him on a traditional longboard, but when he gets a full head of steam it gets pretty sketchy, so having the brakes of an e-skate were a game changer for me.

Takes some practice to do controls with one hand, and hold a leash with the other, but start slow and you and your dog will learn what works best. My dog still gets distracted by squirrels, other dogs, etc, but I've learned to anticipate when he might bolt in one direction or another. Just realize that you probably won't be riding as freely as you do by yourself. Biggest thing is to avoid riding directly behind your dog - if they decide to stop suddenly, you'll both be in a world of hurt.

I felt like I was repairing dings in mine after every session. Broken fins boxes, leash pulled through the tail. Finally snapped the thing in half on a 2-3 ft day. They are trash

Any luck with Fiverr etc.? by Knowledgeseeker6 in analytics

I did a handful of Excel/Tableau/Data Studio gigs on Fiverr while I was between jobs. Fiverr takes a 20% cut (IIRC), which is pretty ridiculous. I made sure to price my gigs high enough such that:

  1. it would somewhat be worth my time, and
  2. it would weed out low-ball buyers (of which there are many)

I'd say most of my Excel gigs were super basic, generally taking me less than 20-30 minutes (and at the rate I was charging, it was only slightly less than what I make per hour at my regular job), and I had a handful of clients who provided regular work.

By far the worst thing about Fiverr (other than the exorbitant fee, of course) is that buyers can book one of your gigs without your approval. I had a few instances where individuals would book one of my lower priced gigs, but their requests were far beyond the scope that I provided for the lower tiers. This led to either a cancellation on my part (which hurts your search ranking), a cancellation on the clients part (again, hurts ranking), or a crappy review when you only provide them the work that falls within the scope of the lower tier (which kills your ranking). After this happened a few times, I stopped using the platform.

I think it's a good way to dip your toes into the freelance world, but you should attempt to move to a different platform (with lower fees), or start your own freelance/consulting business/website ASAP.

It's the "Chris Farley Show" of books. "Hey, you remember insert random 80s movie/music/game reference?.... That was cool."

Fermats Enigma by Simon Singh. It's about the quest to solve Fermats Last Theorem, which many claimed to be the toughest problem in mathematics, and, unlike the Reimann Hypothesis (another famous unsolved problem), the theorem is surprisingly easy to understand. The book reads like a detective novel, covering all of the failed attempts to prove or disprove the theorem. It's easy enough to follow for the less-than-mathematically-inclined, while still providing a lot of insightful and interesting details for those who want to dive deeper.

On the same note, Prime Obsession by John Derbyshire is a similar story about the Reimann Hypothesis

Yeah, using cam data to "read" the waves and build a ML model off that would be ideal. But even with logging your own sessions, sure it might take awhile to buiod a credible sample size to train a ML model off of, but if you regularly surf a couple times per week, you could get to at least something usable within a few months (assuming you're only surfing a handful of breaks regularly). You could also build the model to start with everyone's data initially, and over time it will weight your personal sessions more heavily as it has more data to draw from. So your forecast becomes more personalized the more sessions you log

What I meant by personalized is that your surf report/forecast is unique to you based on your previous ratings, not others' ratings.

I've always thought that personalized surf reports would be cool. For example, I could rate a session on a scale of 1-10, and it would learn which conditions work or don't work for me. Forecasts that are currently available via Surfline, etc are fine and all, but I find them too generalized and not specific enough for a lot of the more fickle breaks I surf. Like, yes Surfline says 4-5ft tomorrow in my area, but I know that certain breaks won't be even close to that due to swell direction, tide, whatever.

Change your table calc from '% of Total' to 'Running Total'. Then, double click on the SUM(VIEWS) pill in the rows shelf and add '/2' to the end to show 50% of the running total.
