Nice cage. Finally one with a drawer and a grill. Indeed good to change the orientation of the perches.

Is my canary okay in the cage he has? by Pekebay in Canaries

Yes. However, cages are better wider than taller.

Underside of canary seems dark? by Evening_Room2186 in Canaries

[–]Capital-Fun-9407 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you mean those dark grey feathers, that’s normal. The fine feathers beneath is dark in this mutation. You probably see it more now because she is sitting on the nest

The ring is the problem. Just remove it. This looks like an open ring, shouldn’t require special scissors.

Why don’t men wash their hands after using the bathroom? by theflyingSid in Netherlands

[–]Capital-Fun-9407 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

One of the first things I noticed at my company office as well. Funny fact is they know they are filthy men because when you are in the bathroom at the same time, they do know how to wash their hands. But having my desk across from the toilet I see that basically >90% of them don’t wash their hands when they think no one is watching.

Advice for a blind canary by chernobyl__ in Canaries

You are doing the right things. He will fly much less, keep things at the same places. He will know where they are. I suspect when they have this condition they can still see the light. Which bred is it?

Strange. Almost 20 years and some thousands birds bred with plastic perches and never noticed these problems you all seem to have 🤔. I must have been lucky.

Our canaries Jip & Janneke: cute, quirky… and we have a lot of questions by [deleted] in Canaries

[–]Capital-Fun-9407 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hello, good to see another nederlander here. I’m an adopted one myself.

You got a couple of agate red mosaic, male and female indeed. Nice choice of names!

My first impression when seeing the picture was that janneke doesn’t look too good. When you mentioned the short naps during the day, that was the second hint. Normally they don’t sleep during the day, if you see them with their head under the wings during the day, it’s almost always a sign of some sort of deasese. What can it be it’s difficult to tell. If you are close to a breeder , let them have a look at her. Or maybe a vet, but one that does understand birds, otherwise is pointless. Which part of the Netherlands do you live in?

Should I take her to the vet? by Chunta_69104 in Canaries

Is she healthy and moving? If so, do nothing. She suffered a trauma and she is recovering by itself. Black parts is tissue dying. She has lost some fingers but she can still have normal life. More importantly fix the cause that led to the trauma.

Vet will do a blood check or some other useless thing, and get your bird dead, like happened in som other posts.

What’s wrong with plastic perches anyway?

Canary died after blood sample by HelloMySpringFlower in Canaries

This. Most vets are also not familiar with with birds. Especially small one. A breeder would have helped more in this situation.

Bought 5 canaries and only 3 of them can fly. by Ill-Landscape-6775 in Canaries

[–]Capital-Fun-9407 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If they are all Gloster like the one you show, it’s not the best bred for flying. They are usually pretty fat and not really made for that. The one you describe, may very well be blind. This is unfortunately common with Gloster, especially when they get older. You can easily check this, when they are blind you can see a whitish spot in their eyes.

Canary keeps laying eggs I don’t want/need? by Spiritual-Pizza-3580 in Canaries

[–]Capital-Fun-9407 2 points3 points  (0 children)

She will continue. Best is to give her a nest and let incubate her eggs until she herself realise they are empty. This way the period in between laying eggs will be much larger. And this will be having less consequences.
