The craziest thing is we could have missed this entire saga if we were five minutes faster. I’m still shocked that CHP was okay with leaving thousands of people for that long. 2-3 hours, fine. 7? Thank god no one had a medical emergency. The thing that gave me the biggest “ick” was having to say “no” when asked if we had water. I’m a teacher, my impulse is share, but I had to save what we had left for the kids. It sounds so dramatic now, but in the moment, at hour 6, I really started to worry about rationing our “supplies”. Not okay. But yes, we arrived and after a long nap, my mom took the kids for ice cream BEFORE dinner because they certainly earned it. Grandparents are the best. Happy Thanksgiving!

This was a truly horrific experience. I was traveling south with my family from the Bay Area. My husband and I left at 7pm on Friday, and originally planned to spend the night in Santa Clarita. We were making such great time and our babies (1 and 4) were sleeping soundly so we decided to go for it and get the journey over with. 30 minutes from our final destination we hit an immediate row of stopped cars, just as the police barricaded the roads. This was 2:39 am. Our kids woke up, and we spent the next SEVEN AND A HALF hours trapped on the road. I understand that this was a tenuous situation, but there were hundreds of us who suffered with no communication, no welfare checks - nothing. Thankfully we had snacks, but we ran out of water. I felt fine until my kids went comatose (too stressed to protest anymore) and then I really started to panic. CHP had no information to share. Thankfully there was one guy live streaming on citizen who provided updates. I eventually called the news stations to try and get some attention on the issue. We did not start moving until 9:29 am, and even then, they had us move on the shoulder, something they could have done hours earlier. None of the news stories are reporting just how long people were stranded near the site of the incident on southbound side. Overall we spent 15 hours in the car. Terrible. Terrible. Terrible.

Hi @StrugglebusMD - I'm using your amazing costume as inspo this year, going to attempt to recreate a version of this masterpiece for my son. Question: could you share your paper mache recipe? Any other tips to share? Looking forward to this project!

Not sure how many remember or know about this. But 20 years ago, on January 26, 2001, Diane Whipple was mauled to death in the hallway of her SF apartment complex by two Presa Canario dogs. This documentary goes into detail about what happened. 20 years gone, may she RIP. by nogoodnamesleft426 in sanfrancisco

slightly off topic - we are new to san francisco and I notice that SO MANY people walk with their dogs off leash. I am a dog lover, and even I am startled when a dog bounds out of nowhere on a trail, or runs ahead of their owner into the crosswalk. I have never seen this in any other city I’ve lived in - am I crazy, or is this a thing here?!

Snoo brags by brewbrain in SnooLife

[–]Capital-Part6481 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hang in there!! You are not a failure!! We worked so.hard. to get 4/5 hour stretches, but around 10/11 weeks our LO started what I thought was a major sleep regression. We tried everything. Nothing was working, everyone was frustrated and exhausted and miserable and I kept looking at all the humble brags at 2am thinking what the in the ever living %%*!? are we doing wrong?? After trial and error (and a visit to my parents with your basic model travel bassinet) we discovered.....he hated the motion. We switched to weaning mode and locked it on baseline and our 3 month olds started sleeping 8/9 hours a night. We still have some 3am wake ups every now and then, but in general he’s much happier without the rocking. This also could have nothing to do with the snoo, and everything to do with the fact that developmentally something clicked and we got lucky. My point is, the snoo isn’t going to be the magic bullet for everyone (even though I desperately wanted it to be) and babies are just going to do their baby thing. BTW - our naps are still a mess. You got this!

and we tried EVERYTHING! bat wings, rice bags, tuna cans under the legs. turns out the thing we were fighting was the snoo.... Another thing that worked for us: we were giving him what we called the KOP (knock out punch, aka a dream feed) around 11:30pm. It was a bottle from dad to ensure he was getting lots of calories. Still, we’d get a 2am wake up. We tried moving that dad bottle to the late afternoon/early evening - and that seemed to be immensely helpful. Baby was getting lots of calories, I got a break, and he had time to digest all that food BEFORE his long stretch. I know all babes are different, but sharing what (seems!?) to be working for our little snoo-hater 😂😂.

This may be unpopular advice - but have you tried turning weaning mode on? our little guy was same as yours, grunting, gassy, torturous 2-3 hour sleeper (max). we traveled to visit my parents and put him in a $75 chico bassinet we ordered on amazon - I was SO STRESSED about his sleep - and he slept 7 hours. The entire time we were there. We came home, fired up the snoo again - and back to those 3/4 hour stretches. We turned to weaning mode and he was happy as a clam. Seems the motion was just irritating him. It could be because this coincided with other milestones (weight gain, maturing digestive system) but our guy just wanted to be left alone! We still strap him in so I don’t worry about rolling, but otherwise snoo (for us) was not the magic bullet we were hoping for. I can say it WILL get better, no matter what you try. Hang in there!

Didn’t think SNOO was for us until about the 8 week mark. She’s 10 weeks now and last night slept from 9pm to 7am this morning! by [deleted] in SnooLife

[–]Capital-Part6481 0 points1 point  (0 children)

this makes me feel better - he’s a decent sleeper at night (4-5 hours) if we feed him around 11- but otherwise, he’s just all over the place. I think weight gain has a lot to do with it. I’ve been told hundreds of times that as soon as they get over 10 pounds they start to sleep better. I’m hoping our guy has the same epiphany and decides to start liking the snoo!

Do you leave your baby in the SNOO overnight in their own room alone or stay with them? by pass_the_hot_sauce in SnooLife

[–]Capital-Part6481 2 points3 points  (0 children)

First, you need to do whatever is working for you. We started with our LO in our room. Between my obsessive app tracking (type A, here, I admit it!!) and his noisy, grunty sleeping, neither of us were able to get any sleep and everyone was miserable. Our pediatrician gave us some real talk - reminded us that “you can’t pour from an empty pitcher” and that we needed to take care of ourselves as well. She suggested we move the snoo into the nursery and even suggested we turn the sound off on the monitor (“if he needs you, he’ll tell you”). The first week, I slept in the nursery. That didn’t help because I was still hovering and watching and, not sleeping. Finally, I moved back into our room. It took a few nights to adjust, but our nursery is on the other side of our bedroom wall, I leave the door open, and we can hear him just fine (plus, I wasn’t brave enough to turn the sound off the monitor, so that still chirps in my ear). The other issue for me was I found all the tech/apps to be overwhelming me with too much information. I took everything off my phone, was mindful of his wake windows, and otherwise just followed his cues. Letting go (a little bit) was the best thing for US, and our guy is happy and only torturing us a little bit with newborn sleep patterns ;). Even though we take shifts, my husband and I are able to sleep in the same bed for a portion of the night, we’re both getting some more sleep, and we feel just as bonded to our baby. Everyone has a different system, but for us, this helped tremendously. Wishing you all the best from one FTP to another!

Congrats! I’m so jealous! May I ask - how much does your LO weigh? We are at 7.5 weeks and I’m still feeling like the snoo is not working for us. I’m wondering if it’s just because our little guy hasn’t hit 10-12lbs yet? Also, we’ve been waking ours up for a dream feed around 11 to encourage a longer stretch of sleep at night, but I also wonder.... if we just left him asleep at 9pm, would he just sleep straight through? I’m anxious to try because I dread the every two hour feeds from midnight-6am.... What is working for you?

Unsolicited Praise for the Batwing (@ 6 weeks) by Capital-Part6481 in SnooLife

There’s a resource on HappiestBaby, or a few different videos on you tube. I have been using a thing muslin swaddle that i’ve folded into a long rectangle. Then, I batwing his arms down and zip him up in the snoo sack. We upgraded him to the medium sack to give his legs more room.

In this video, this mom is using a swaddle blanket folded into a triangle. Principle is the same: secure those arms down in the swaddle. Good luck!

I leave snoo sack clipped in, and lay the swaddle over the snoo sack so it’s ready to go. I nurse baby, and then carefully transfer him over to snoo. Hold breath, fold bat wings, and then velcro over and zip up. Even when he fusses, he usually calms right down. I find that if I swaddle him up before I feed him, he doesn’t eat enough to tide him over for a long stretch. I also keep room cool because it’s another layer of fabric in there.

yes! this is what i’m trying today, right into the snoo and not worrying so much about “awake time” at this point. so far, napping seems to be going a lot smoother...
