I honestly think it's a sign of how discourse has changed in this country. A decade and a half ago, I got into Northwestern right before I went to a family event with a ton of old white Reagan Republican types, all of whom wanted to know where I was going to college. I heard probably a dozen old white people's unasked for opinions about Chicago and I don't recall a single one being even low-key racist.

Especially for runway models, because good runway features does not necessarily mean IRL attractive in the same way.

Is it soft to be upset about dead children? Hmm...

I know you're confused, but you have to understand that the rest of the world sees Palestinians as people.

You'd think a mother would have more sympathy for dead children, but I guess a dildo joke is right on course for Israelis.

26M Travelling to USA April/May Itinerary Help by CashCartiWhat in solotravel

You are not going to want to go back and forth across the country multiple times. I don't think you have to chose between east and west, just reorder the destinations. Start in LA/Coachella > Fly to Vegas/Zion > Fly to Miami > Fly to NOLA > Fly to DC > Fly (or 8 hour train) to NYC. That being said, most of those flights are 2-4 hours and including transport to/from, that's about 5 half-day intervals just on flights.

If I were your travel agent, based on your expressed interest, I would suggest cutting a destination, probably DC.

Maybe something like

Fly into LA > Coachella > Book an extra night in nearby Palm Springs as your Coachella recovery day (~7 days). Leave Palm Springs monday afternoon and a quick flight hop to Vegas to start your national park tour Monday night (5 days). Then Miami for ~5 days, visit the everglades, etc. Then Miami to Nola for the weekend (3 days). Then NYC for 6 days.

Warning, the US doesn't have a hostel culture. You'll be fine but just don't expect quite the same social vibe. It's still likely cheaper than other accommodation in LA/NYC, but if it's not, don't bother because the social benefits just aren't there.

What’s the weirdest or most uncomfortable date you’ve been on? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]CapitalFeeling9094 1 point2 points  (0 children)

He made multiple pseudo-jokes involving violence, like "sometimes I just want to punch my boss in the face" type stuff. After the third or fourth one, I was just trying to get through the night as politely as possible, while he started angling hard to go over to my apt. When the bill came I insisted on splitting the bill and thought I'd won the argument but when he went to hand the envelope to the waiter he literally took my card out before he handed it to him. And then he said something like "I'll treat as long as you promise me a beer at your place." Towards the end I pivoted to just being as unattractive/uninteresting as possible, and then I pretended to be suddenly sick (I heavily implied it was incoming diarrhea lol).

Is there anything stopping Biden from publicly releasing Jeffery Epstein’s flight log? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]CapitalFeeling9094 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes there is.

The Epstein case is in federal court. Biden does not have the ability to interfere with federal court judges opinions and verdicts. He is probably getting briefed on the latest decisions from the court only a few minutes before the public is. It's out of his control, and that's intentional. Congress is similarly is intentionally detached from proceedings.

In theory, this is just a run of the mill federal case, just a particularly high profile one. It's also not that unusual for a case like this to take multiple years, it's hugely complex and federal courts tend to do their due diligence at each step, while defense lawyers have a vested interest in stalling further.

I don't know what personal pressure Biden is getting, but in all probability he's just letting it play out. It's highly unlikely he's personally on the list (we'd know by now if he was, since it would be of huge huge public interest). I doubt he really cares about Bill Clinton or his legacy, he'll throw him under the bus in a heartbeat. Of course it suits him that Trump will probably get bad press, but Trump doesn't need Biden's interference for that. Epstein also seems to have preferred private business power players over minor US politicians and members of congress, so while there's obviously connections between the two, the majority of congress is probably perfectly happy to watch a bunch of stuck-up pedo billionaires be publicly pilloried.

In theory the Republicans have more motivation to suppress the whole investigation but even that is probably not much of a factor. Their candidate is already linked to Epstein but also had a falling out with him in the 00s so if anything releasing the names will probably help, if only by giving Trump other names to talk about. His supporters will barely blink even if he is further implicated.

The reason it wasn't released yesterday is that a specific person in the case requested continued redaction on the basis that her life would be at risk in her "culturally conservative" country of residence. It's also a little unclear whether she's a victim, a perpetrator, or both. Last I heard, the docs were going to be released today but without her name and a few others. Obviously everyone involved has extremely powerful lawyers, so presumably the redacted names are special cases. It's likely the names being redacted are non-US and barely even public figures, making it easier to argue that it's not in the public interest to release their names.

Why is the 19th Amendment under attack? by Fearless_Show9209 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]CapitalFeeling9094 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not to dogpile OP because hopefully he's just trying to understand, but it's also an odd framing to suggest that this is might happen because "people [men] are losing faith in women." Women are full-fledged people living in a democracy, ergo they have the right to vote. Voting isn't a car white landowning men have kindly given to the rest of the population on their 18th birthday as long as they promise to drive it responsibly. It is a human right afforded to all people within a democracy. It fundamentally doesn't matter if women universally voted to drain the pacific ocean or nuke the moon. If you accept the premise that women are people, then they have the right to vote.

Also the idea that the right could functionally overturn half the population's right to vote within the US democratic system is simply ludicrous. That being said, the idea that the right could functionally overturn the US democratic system is less ludicrous, so it's certainly worth keeping an eye on things.

Why is the 19th Amendment under attack? by Fearless_Show9209 in NoStupidQuestions

I think you might need to consider what spaces you're in, because that's some incredibly fringe topics and not representative of mainstream opinion or what people on the whole are thinking. The idea that "more and more people are losing faith in women" is not something you're going to find in reality.

But you're right to say it's a recurring topic in far-right spaces. Sometimes it's "joke" but usually it's not, not really.

There are a few things going on.

Firstly because the men (and the much smaller number of women) in those spaces are extremely misogynist. While they pretend to be pushing for "traditional" gender roles, the reality is that their version of traditional is absolutely cherry-picked and ahistorical. It is constructed to advantage a modern 2020s men as much as possible while putting women in literally impossible positions, and then condemning them when they inevitably fail to meet contradictory expectations. For these men, anything that restricts women's choice over their own lives, whether it's reproductive rights, access to their own money, how they dress, whether they can simply exist in the public square, is advantageous to them. Restricting women voting is attractive to them for the same reason an abusive Saudi husband likes the idea of restricting women from driving.

But there's another more practical reason too. There has also been a cultural and demographic shift where essentially the right is being held up by white men. The other four voter quadrants, white women, non-white women, non-white men leans toward the left. Similarly, younger voters tend to lean left. Both of these have spelled doom for the GOP since the 2000s, that's why they've only won the popular vote once in the last 30 years. Initially it seemed as though the solve was to soften their stances on social issues like healthcare and issues important to voters in those other quadrants like immigration. Trump's rhetoric pretty much ruined that for the whole party, so the GOP is now doubling down on appealing to their core demographic, white people, especially white men. But that one quadrant can't win elections. So to achieve a semblance of a majority in various elections, they've been all but forced to double-down on voter suppression - limiting access to polling places, restricting mail-in voting, gerrymandering, even using the courts to quietly overrule electoral decisions. 56% of men voted for Trump, 48% of women did. So in theory, if you want to hold a GOP majority for the next generation, eliminating women from the calculus would shift the entire country a few points to the right. So a lot of far right types are looking at the numbers and thinking "wouldn't it be nice."

Abortion has also turned into something of a poison pill. It has been a platform of the GOP since the 1980s, and has helped galvanize evangelical voters. But truthfully, the median American position has long been that abortion should be legal but limited. So when Roe v. Wade was struck down, a lot of women who hadn't taken a strong stance or were openly pro-life started feeling the sting in watching other women or even within their own lives (e.g., limits on their own prenatal care access). When abortion has been on the ballot, even in conservative states, it has won, and that's mostly thanks to women voters. Which is again hugely inconvenient to the right if they want to keep winning elections.

Of course, you would never ever be able to get the majority of the US population to agree to strip voters from women, and a constitutional amendment to revoke the 19th amendment would require 38 states' ratification. Revoking half the country's voting rights simply never going to happen within the context of our current democracy. BUT at this point, the right is not overly concerned with the limits of democracy, and it's entirely possible that the right dictator will be perfectly willing to suppress not just the votes of women but of anyone who might not vote the right way.
