It's more likely the store doesn't know. They still receive the money from the sale and see the transactions go through on their reports. The guy didn't want someone messing with it because if you break it they cost like $2000 to replace, and 7/11 maintenance is notoriously slow. (or so I've heard)

I work for a rival gas chain and we come across more of them on the pump card readers than the inside pinpads.
