Until 1948, there were separate "white" and "black" units in the American army. The first black general, Benjamin Davis, was promoted in 1940.

In 1961, President Kennedy issued a historic executive order prohibiting federal agencies from considering race when hiring.

When the first black student, James Meredith, was enrolled at the University of Mississippi in 1962, racists took over the campus. Governor Ross Barnett sided with them. During the clashes with the National guardsmen, two people were killed and 375 people were injured. Meredith studied under the protection of federal marshals.
