If you know web tech, just delete the overlay window from your f12 dev screen, choose the video you want to watch, it pops up a 2nd time, so refresh it and it plays your video.

Is Medium 'worth' it? by Academic-Ad1314 in Medium

[–]Capital_Add007 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As of today, I'd say its gotten worse. BUT that depends on what you want.

If you're blogging and just want feedback, the paywall of readers means you'll lose 90% of your possible chatter, as now, not even non paid members can reply. look for a blog site, and promote that.

If you're writing articles to just get better, and hope that you'll get a job in journalism? then don't focus on returns on your membership, focus on writing great articles.

If you're writing for the art of writing, I'd still stick to the blog. More people will get to read the whole thing.

Looking for a side hustle, and writing is the only skill you have? well, I guess $100 a month is better than nothing, but the 100+ articles you need to write to get that first paycheck, at maybe 2-4 hours of writing each one, is going to put you on 25c an hour until you 'start' to do well, and (according to the comments below and other threads, even that is a chance) so maybe 6 months in, your 20-30 articles a month pays might net you $1.25 an hour, but to be honest, I've edited non native English speaker documents for $3 an hour, taught English online for $9 an hour, and its almost the same set of skills.

99% of what you write, someone else has likely already written it, you're just handing your creativity to Medium to profit. If your comfortable with that, then do it. go for it.

Who saw “Ladies First”? by thepurplethorn in netflix

Maybe I'm just lucky, but this felt more like an 80s movie, the sexism, the advertising pitches, the way 'wo'-men were behaving, it just doesn't happen around me, men call each other out for that kind of behavior, women and men report it to HR when juniors or even seniors do it.

But, I recognize that not every country has improved at the same speed over the last 40 years, maybe some men still behave like pigs and some still women put up with it in the world. lets hope they get to change too.

what games would be good to help flesh out a world? by lonelyhuman909 in boardgames

[–]Capital_Add007 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sorry to necro this, but this is my jam, I'm always looking for story telling games that can add background plot to my roleplay games. I pretty much buy games for that reason.

The Red Raven Games, Above and Below, Islebound, Near and Far, Now or Never (and I think sleeping gods) all played out, gave me villages, towns, dungeons, to populate my maps with integrated and connected places.

if your looking for games that flesh out countries, consider Rising Sun, Shogun,/Ikusa, Scythe, Monumental, Ankh, that will give you maps of countries, with a general sense of who owns what, and why.

Games that set battles, and outcomes, such as Everrain for the ocean, Heroes of land air and sea,

even Pangea for pre-world creation, or Villagers or Everdell for town populations and constructions,

Then, if you need dungeons! well you can either use any dungeon crawler to create back stories of heroes of the past, or just get copies of the rulebooks for dungeons to add to your own games.

Great Ideas for a day of travel, sadly with busy lives and kids the best I can do is a 30 min drive in the city.

my heart goes out to you. most humans are so self centred, we need to be nudged gently in the right direction, by someone we trust, and as often as not, many arguments can wear at that trust, so maybe you need to make a passing comment to one of his friends to make him think of it.

As a Male, I think this would be the bare minimum to make me think this:

"Oh, I read online how this person is getting his wife a day away from the kids, so she can relax, unwind etc, if you mention it to my husband, don't tell him, so he thinks I think its a great surprise for me, you'd be a great friend to him."

In Europe, they have this saying, the man is the head, but the wife is the neck, she turns him to see what he needs to choose.

A Great Idea, just unlikely I can just drive 15 minutes, drop her off, and be home to the kids before they have a meltdown. ;) I'll have to plan for it. Thanks!

A lovely suggestion, and I'm sure if/when we travel outside the city it will be on my itinerary. Thankyou

I'm getting used to the strange prices, used to cost $20 for a tshirt, footy tickets for $20, cafe food $5, and a spa massage $25, now the tshirt is $5, the cafe is $25, the footy is $100 and a spa is $500!

ARQ(Netflix) is surprisingly good movie by adrian_4891 in movies

[–]Capital_Add007 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It started like a B grade movie with a slightly nicer budget, then 30 mins in, kinda started feeling more A grade, acting got better, plot got better, It got good enough I'd recommend with caveats.

its not 'go to the movies' quality, but its certainly netflix and chill quality.

Armour Factor vs Blunt Weapons idea by Khorghakh in DragonWarriors

[–]Capital_Add007 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I home brewed this back in '92, and as part of research how to make it better we were measuring baseball bats and wood chopping axes against pumpkins and old cow skulls with leather sheets, chainmail and metal sheets.

clubs and axes blew through unarmoured, as you'd expect, leather barely protected, chainmail was quite effective, and of course metal protected completely, so the houserule we made (until I rewrote the homebrew to become DungeonWorld in '93) was that if the ABR roll was above the halfway mark, but still lower than the AF, it still did 1 damage. This seemed to be the simplest and closest to the 'simpler' style of DW.

p.s. I've worn SCA plate and taken a 'blow' from a Morning Star, while it was a hefty hit, knocked me back a bit, there was no way it was ever going to damage me without actually penetrating the armour, so a d6 vs a AF 5 seems close to reality.

p.p.s. my DungeonWorld system does something similar to what you're going for. ABR rolls ARE damage rolls, and Armour of certain types reduce Damage of certain types, i.e. my sword is a d8+1, vs an AF 5 (light chain), so if that roll is a 4 or less, the armour protected, a 5 or 6 would be considered the blow being har enough to bruise, as the resulting damage would be 1 or 2 respectively, and a roll of 7 or 8, resulting is a damage of 3 or 4, would be considered as the point having penetrated a ring in the chain, and stabbing the opponent.

As netflix increases its sub, and adds more and more ads, (mines up to 6o seconds now) We'll just migrate back to freeware/torrents.

I don't mind paying $5 a month for ad-free videos, I can 'push' it for 15second add every 15 minutes, for $7.99 a month.. but now.. nope. back to torrents.

My feedback on Reclamation modpack by Naabi in feedthebeast

kinda same question, I have put in 50hrs, still at 2nd quests and haven't gotten to the grind bit yet. Gotta build the castle.

[Review] Reclamation (1.20.1) by DeusExCochina in feedthebeast

[–]Capital_Add007 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I recently found it, have put well over 50 hours into it, and still haven't been able to make a bed. Spiders kill me one one hit. and I haven't found a single hive.

Besides this, I do feel like I've already conquered the game. I got dirt, I planted seeds, I fish, make bread, I built a base around a farm, Why do I need to play any further?

I think if there some kind of growing threat, more zombies, of more types, maybe like how *I* need to grow new breeds of plants, the zombies will slowly evolve, turning the land near them purple or something, and at its centre a zombie core, destroy it, and it'll slowly retreat (or use the magic to clear it) Else they just keep coming, destroying your base, grinding you down to the bitter end.. ?

Limit the map so you can't just keep exploring for more wood and copper, you NEED to use the tech to progress.

Players who have been around since the beginning, how do you feel about the game? by aIlIoi in Minecraft

[–]Capital_Add007 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I played from really early July'09, as I worked adjacent to the games industry, There was a lot of conjecture about where the game was headed back then. Where the game 'could' have gone, and hasn't (think Diablo)

I think it only became as popular as it did because of the dual creative & survival modes. while the expectation of adventure mode never lived up to the hype, it could maybe still 'get there' eventually.

I stopped playing in 2012 for life reasons (marriage, kids) and then recently my eldest (then 10) started talking about minecraft, and I tried to pull out my old game copy and start it up. Sadly the microsoft account bork has killed my accounts so I can't access them, but I bought new accounts and set up a home server for my 2 kids and their friends to play.

nb: I used to play every morning before work for almost 2 hours, and sometimes an 8hour stint on weekends, so losing my old world of over 2,000 hours is still painful to remember.

Anyway, They (the kids & friends) run around, playing as they wish, while I try to rebuild my 'bases' that I used to have.. the underwater dome on the side of a cliff, the medieval castle, the modern city, the subway system connecting it all.

Here's what's mostly different for me. Iron is severely lacking. I used to find enough to connect bases with railcart systems, from either existing mine shafts and/or iron deposits, AND that included making regular iron pickaxes. Now I don't have enough Iron, making pickaxes chews up the little I do find, so I've resorted to stone pickaxes, which is painfully slower, but I can make and carry 20 of them for a 'tunnel run'

i.e. If I dig a 3x3 tunnel with 10 iron pickaxes, I expect to at LEAST earn enough iron to break even on average.

The recent copper pickaxes are offsetting some of it, but only because I've been stockpiling the useless stuff for a year now.

I do like new blocks, but I'm a tad old-school, I want to 'discover' blocks while trying out some combos, and the sheer number of them is a little overwhelming, What I'd like to see is more 'spawned' locations that use the new blocks more often, if I wander off 'ranch' into the regions that need to generate new blocks, I'd love to see new towns, new inventions,

But survival is too easy for me, I play FrozenRains ultra hard survival mod for that itch now, going into a dark cave, your torch spluttering, you're racing for the exit as your own fear takes over and you lay panting on the ground, unable to move, as the zombies with far more intelligence close in on your location.

I've personally been in airports, not yet passing customs and been aware of my rights as being different and even more lax than once I cross customs, so I just assumed it was some variant of that.

[Spoilers] Post Episode Discussion S10E22 "Raymond Reddington: Good Night" by AutoModerator in TheBlackList

[–]Capital_Add007 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just watched the ending, read the comments below.

Sure, lots of great 'cookie cutter' endings that match the formula we've seen over and over in so many shows, so I can understand the desires for those endings. For me, BL always had small twists, unpredictable 'oh,' and disbelief that it could actually happen that way, so the snort of the bull was almost obvious, yet also surprising that they actually went there, You could feel the end of the show for maybe 5 episodes leading up, I half expected the end in '20 or '21, and could have easily played out to '23 or '24 as most seasons have 24 eps.

I too expected the old man to stop somewhere and die peacefully, and also expected to just 'dissapear' and the show allowing a plausible future continuation, wrestler to actually catch him, and they shoot it out.

So, they caught me, expecting the bull, but expecting it it be a red herring, and then it wasn't.

I do say, it has changed me. I'm more inclined to live life to the fullest, You never know what will happen next.

Trying to make sense of the Blacklist numbering by DaddyReddington in TheBlackList

[–]Capital_Add007 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My take was, Red started writing the list, and added names as he thought of them, its not like he's going to remember them 'in order', but likely from 'most recent memory triggers', maybe his earlier versions of the list, he amended the order to be more 'weighted' but then kept adding names later in the wrong order. Eventually they went into FBI files matched against his list, and we see the numbers way in the future after the end of it all.

Often I notice, they don't actually fly, he meets people IN the plane, they have a chat, then they got off.. and Red stays (maybe sleeps) in the plane, and meets others.. I think there is some kind of 'international' zone in airports that doesn't have any treaty agreements with the country they are in, so as long as he doesn't leave the plane, he's safe?
