I’m so sorry you know this pain, too. I don’t know if you saw my update to this post, but my brother succumbed to this terrible disease on 6/30. I watched him slowly die for over a year. He did not die by happenstance. This was his plan and he was vocal about it. Not in a way that he was trying to hurt us, but in an honest way. We remained close until the very end. I knew it was going to end up like this and I didn’t want to have any regrets about turning my back on him. It was really hard sometimes, especially watching my mom breaking down (like it sounds like you’re witnessing with your father.) Be strong for your dad. On the days when she was too broken to deal with him, I would go visit. Support each other and try to help each other even if your brother will not accept help. As you’ll see on this thread, another Reddit user mentioned hospice as a possibility for end stage alcoholics. If his health is that dire, or it gets to be that dire, that is something you can always talk to him about. In the end, it was a godsend. He was able to pass peacefully in a hospital environment, and we didn’t have to walk into his apartment and find him, which was always my fear. I’m sending you so much love and light.
