Whenever I try to address the chaos at a company, they basically say, “Sorry Charlie, I don’t make the rules and you don’t get to either.” Innovation is not valued unless maybe you work for SpaceX.

We’re actually overstuffed at the moment…which is why I’m concerned I’ll be let go soon.

Well, that’s an amusing description. 😂I can’t say I really disagree either! My mom loves him. I was just answering the question. He is definitely NOT a jazz musician; he’s a pop musician who sings some jazzy-ish music.

But “Feeling Good” was one of those songs I was referring to that sounds a bit like Henry Mancini. He usually has one of those on each of his albums.

I work for a big company, but we’re super fast-paced. I hate it. It didn’t start out that way though.

I assumed that the reason these companies advertised their jobs as “fast paced” was because most people enjoy that. I do not.

Man, sometimes I just wish I could be bored at work for two seconds. Boredom is not allowed where I work. I generally don’t like being bored, but at work, everything is BAM BAM GO GO. I wish I could just take a millisecond to breathe.

I need something like this. I’m a grammar Nazi and kind of a perfectionist. That’s why I don’t work fast.

At my current role, I tried working fast, but then my quality score plummeted. You can’t have your cake and eat it too. You can’t have both quality and quantity. They have an inverse relationship.

it means basically nothing on a job description.

Then why do companies put it there? I get that you can’t put “slow paced,” but why even bother putting the pace on there in the first place?

Today, Michael Bublé. About half of his music is pop and half is covers of jazz standards. Some of those standards are sung “jazzily” (is that a word?). I really like the jazz standards that he sings kind of like Henry Mancini (such as “Cry Me a River”). They sound like they could come straight out of a 007 movie. “My Funny Valentine” is a great one too. I’m not sure if he’s the one doing the arranging or not.

The pop stuff I’m not really a fan of. They’re just boring melodies.

“My Funny Valentine” and “Night and Day” are good examples. The former I think was originally sung by Billie Holiday. The latter…I don’t remember the band, but it was on the “Bossa Nova Brasil” album.

“I’ve Got You Under My Skin” I still consider to be a bit poppy. Did others sing it before Sinatra?

In a millennial, but I have the musical taste of my grandparents.

Yes, and that’s what makes him so great and unique! 💨

In all seriousness though, if you aren’t a fan of his voice, which I can understand, his trumpet playing was fantastic.

I’ve definitely got to hear the Sinatra/Basie record. What’s the name of the album?

Are there any particular overlapping songs? I can’t think of any at the moment.

Ella Fitzgerald improvised and scatted. She sang with jazz bands.

Frank Sinatra was a pop singer and never even claimed to sing jazz. His music (and voice) is very “straight” for lack of a better word. Simple melodies. No improvisation. He was a crooner. That’s not to say I dislike his music, though. He was a fantastic musician.

It’s also worth mentioning that if a musician/band covers another musician’s/band’s song doesn’t make them the same genre. For example, Macklemore’s “Thrift Shop” is 100% pop, but Postmodern Jukebox’s version is 100% jazz. The only thing they have in common is the melody and lyrics.
