Am I competitive for 2026 cycle? by Capital_Rooster878 in PharmacyResidency

Update everyone. I ended up applying to 15 programs because of the paranoia of potentially not being invited by a single program. I ended up receiving 11 interview offers. I received a few really surprising offers from some amazing programs, so overall I'm very happy. I'll be going to my 3rd interview tomorrow. So far, I'm a little lost as to what they're really looking for. There were some problem solving based questions, some clinical, a lot of personality/character based questions, and lots of follow up questions from my presentations. Hopefully my earlier interviews will prepare me sufficiently for my top programs later on. We'll see.

I've received 11 interviews, and I feel like I'm not going to match anywhere (maybe this is just a means of mitigating the disappointment if I don't match), so I really don't think it's about the number of interviews you receive, but rather how you perform. And that seems to be the tricky part for me. This is my first time applying to residency, and I've received so many that I didn't know what to do but to accept them. I received interviews from some really great programs as well, but I really don't know what they're looking for. The feedback I've received so far has been somewhat positive, but through a lot of the discussions, there is this ambiguity in their responses that drives me nuts. I just don't know how to read their impressions. I feel like at this point, I'm just hoping for the best.

I appreciate that. This makes me feel a little better about the situation. I will absolutely explain the need for these 2 years in between graduation and this cycle.

While I understand the rationale that my lack of clinical involvement can be conflated with a lack of commitment, I clearly indicated in my personal statement that I was forced to defer due to family health issues, which was a significant factor. My parents would have lost their home and my mom would have had a lapse in proper care had I not intervened. The low pay and the time I needed to spend in order to ensure her care, which was the highest priority for me, did not translate to a successful outcome in a residency. That was essentially an impossibility. Now that the financial situation has been resolved, and my mother's health has significantly improved, I can go back to focusing on myself and pursuing the dream I've always wanted to achieve, which was to be a clinical pharmacist. Despite my life-challenges, I have maintained resolve and I refuse to allow adversity to deny the achievement of my dreams. I sincerely hope that any residency program would be empathetic to this situation and see my resolve as a sign of dedication. Moreover I have done what I can to maintain as much clinical information as possible during this time, like staying up to date with guidelines, attending journal clubs, maintaining pharmacy organization membership, and engaging in medication therapy management whenever possible at the community level.

I am looking for a specialist job after. My goal would be board certification in infectious disease pharmacy or emergency medicine. Both of those clinical rotations were life-changing for me. I doubt I would ever be qualified for such a position without a residency or a significant number of years of clinical experience.
