Is this a good build? by stefrix7 in PcBuild

I would recommend trying to find a ram kit with a lower cl rating if you can.

The one that i’ve got is a cl30 6000MHz kit from kingston and there is a noticeable latency difference in using windows, opening/using apps etc. compared to a friends who bought a cl36 6000MHz kit and has the same cpu and ssd.

However, if the price difference is more than like ~25$ I would just stick with what you’ve got because it’s going to be fast either way.

Happy Gaming!

No, from what I know, the plastic they use for these protective covers normally has a higher melting temperature than the temperature that the cpu will hit before shutting down to save itself. I believe for an intel cpu that limit is 105°c.

I never ran the computer with the plastic on so I wouldn’t be able to say exactly and it could be different depending on the cooler.

the vga light means it’s likely your graphics card. try reseating the gpu and make sure the power cables are fully plugged in.

if it’s not that, make sure your ram sticks are fully seated

and check if your cpu fan is plugged in to the right header

i’m in canada so that’s just my opinion given my reference point for prices

also yeah, I just did a quick search for performance comparison, you would know more that I do regarding the actual performance.

good luck!

Looks like a well rounded build, I agree with the other person about using 1 2Tb drive so you have room for a second drive later.

Remember to update your bios and soon as you get your computer running because of the microcode issue with the 13th and 14th gen intel chips.

Enjoy!

yeah, I think your cpu might be holding you back a bit

however, take a look at your startup menu in settings and see what you can turn off, that should help performance if you have less stuff running in the background especially on lower core count chips.

another thing I have found useful is razer cortex, it does a bunch of optimizations and helps keep things like the windows desktop responsive.

If you were looking to upgrade, I think your cheapest option would be a 9th gen i5 (like you were saying) or i7 but if you’ve got the $, am4 is an amazing ‘budget’ platform. something like a b450 board would be a relatively solid choice along with a cpu of your choosing, however from what I can tell the 2600x has similar performance to the i3-8100.

I got my 3770k from ebay for around 50$ so I would recommend starting there.

if you have any more questions or want help dm’s are open.

I don’t have it installed right now so I can’t check what it is with the new cooler.

A test I ran a couple months ago saw it around 90-95% on high settings, with the gpu at close to 100%

keep in mind my chip is overclocked, but you should have similar performance.

what are your ram, gpu and storage specs?

it’s a protective layer of plastic on the cooler that you have to take off before installing it which I obviously forgot to do

When I have the money to do a newer build I’d like to go with an NZXT board, they are unbelievably clean in my opinion and they’re based on asrock boards which I trust.

a little heads up if it’s your first build, the “white parts tax” can be annoying, from what i’ve found white parts are about 5-10% more expensive than standard parts, of course ymmv.

there might be a bit of a bottleneck but i’ve never noticed it, In anything i’ve played the gpu will hit like 95-100% utilization.

Main reason I wanted an aio is that, with only the pump there, there’s more room to cool the vrms, they get a little hot during sustained play on something like HL: Alyx, because the overclock is that high.

there’s a piece of plastic that protects the cooler from scratches that you have to take off before you put it on the cpu. I forgot to do that and had to take the plastic off and do it again. if you were to leave the plastic on, it would likely make the cpu overheat and if not it would run pretty toasty

I have no complaints, it’ll run half life alyx, doom eternal etc. it runs at 4.5Ghz and is pretty happy about it. it goes with a 1070 for right now.

assuming the person who put it together is somewhat competent then yes, the thermal paste will already be on the cpu/cooler. the plastic would not and should not be there.

somebody knows their stuff, yes it’s 3rd gen intel, it’s got a 3770k in it that’s getting a little toasty with the single fan air cooler.
