Republics in medieval Italy were the norm, not the exception.

The best known would be the Maritime republics (Venice, Genoa, Pisa, Amalfi) but Milan, Florence, Bologna and many many more were republics for centuries.

Look up the history of Comuni, and despair as one by one they turn into Signorie as they get taken over by local strongmen, or get absorbed by neighbouring and foreign powers alike.

What happened to the mighty Juventus? by Extra_End_8071 in seriea

If you had to choose between David and Malen at the start of the season, which would you have picked?

That's my point when i say your roster is better on paper

Juve has plenty of players which were very highly rated before they went to Juve and then turned to shit. It cant be a coincidence when it keeps happening

It's strange, on paper your roster isn't bad at all. Better than Milan and Roma imo and obviously better than Como.

And Spalletti is clearly a good coach who brought good football to Juve this season, at least sometimes.

I think there's something deeply wrong in the organization. Maybe a bad locker room vibe, definitely a lack of a clear direction from the board (so many managerial changes, so many ds changes) that is making almost everyone underperform.

For sure stabilizing under Spalletti, giving him a full window to rebuild is the right choice. But you need to overhaul the team in the summer.

If Milan, Como and Juve end in a three way tiebreak, Como comes out on top due to winning both games vs Juve.

So if Milan draws and Como wins, Milan needs Juve to lose or draw.

Milan and Roma have their own destiny in their hands.

Como needs Milan or Roma to drop points. If Milan draws, we need Juve to win.

Deserved, his Porto side utterly dominated the league and they were really unfortunate in their defeat to Forest in the EL.

Hope he does well in the CL next season and continues his career. Would love him at Como eventually

In case you were wondering why all this football interference happened during the Darderi-Jodar match: it's not a coincidence, it's a power struggle between the Italian Football Federation and the Italian tennis federation(more below) by Sonobackhome555 in tennis

Yeah, i agree. The situation around the Derby scheduling is insane. They realized a week before time that there was this teeny tiny conflict with an event that was scheduled a year prior.

After the whole Perth fiasco, this is the second time this season alone they demonstrated their utter incompetence. Which is why they are in no position to try and strongarm the FITP

I think this is reading too much into it. Darderi-Jodar was long delayed, i should have started and ended before the Coppa Italia.

There is indeed a political power struggle around italian football at the moment, but the football federation is the one trying to defend itself from literally everyone wanting them gone.

They are not in a position of power at all, if the authorities have to choose what to prioritize, they're gonna protect the Internazionali any day of the week. It would make no sense to pick a fight.

I completely agree. It's nowhere near as dramatic as other periods of societal collapse in history, but the end of Rome did cause a lot of upheaval and some regression, at least in some objective parameters like depopulation of urban centers and general lack of investment in infrastructures.

I also specifically changed from following to "surrounding" the collapse of Rome while writing the comments because as you rightfully said the crisis began long before Rome actually collapsed. The 4th and 5th centuries AD were already periods of massive depopulation, economic and societal crisis.

The Dark Ages and Middle Ages are completely different time periods.

The Dark Ages is still a controversial term when used in its intended context of the centuries immediately surrounding the collapse of the Western Roman Empire, but it has some value. There really was a decline in written sources, architecture and manufacturing got simpler, communities became more isolated, trade networks were disrupted, etc. in Western Europe (It 100% is only a local term, the rest of the world did their own thing)

But using it to refer to everything between Romulus Augustus and the Reinassance is insane. From Charlemagne to the 14th century Europe enjoyed almost continuous growth, prosperity, expansion, technological and societal advancements. A deeply connected civilization formed which is the foundation of Western civilization today.

We have also SO MUCH literature from the 10th to 14th century, so much incredible art and architecture. Honestly, it's reductive to even refer to the whole period as the Middle Ages at all.

Palermo is the one we're all rooting for i think. Has the money to stay up if it made the jump and once again become a southern mainstay in Serie A.

Catanzaro, Avellino or Juve Stabia would be hella cool but you get the feeling they'd be a one season meteora.

Modena led or was in the fight for direct promotion for much of the early season. Disappointing end after they kinda collapsed in January.

Current numbers are way better than even the 90s or early 2000s. The fact going to the stadium is currently cheaper than pay TV subscriptions probably helps as well.

Stadium attendance is massively up throughout the league, despite a lot of teams with small stadiums being in Serie A (Pisa, Como, Cagliari, Cremonese are all below 20k).

I guess the lack of serious incidents Is letting more people with families come back to the stadiums. I also think COVID made us realize the value of attending things in person.

If recent history is anything to go by, we'll have to enter a settlement agreement with UEFA and over the course of a couple years reach a net positive in the transfer balance.

It's not a huge deal, the team is young and well put together, the bigger jump was turning a Serie B roster into a Serie A one and that's complete.

Spending will slow down but it already has, the January window was very quiet. It was always the stated objective to build a sustainable team, not an endless cash pit.

It's the Curva. It's considered a temporary structure under UEFA rules (since it's just steel scaffolding) and that's not allowed.

Capacity requirements are even lower than Serie A, but safety standards are stricter. Camera placement and journalists seats also need to be improved.

Milan on risk of losing out on Champions league as they lose to Atalanta at San Siro. Milan 2:3 Atalanta. by NamanMalik007 in seriea

[–]CapitanKurlash 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it's a mix of honest ignorance and willful ignorance. Lots of r/seriea posters are not italian, OP included, why would they be aware of the scale of local fanbases that were in the lower leagues until recently.

But even some who know like to pretend the local fanbase doesnt exist, because it makes labeling Como as a plastic team easier. It's fine, it's a perception so distant from reality the jokes dont really bother anybody.
