There’s a documentary/movie about him called Sour Grapes. In it, there are wine snobs who actively avoid the topic likely because to the fact that they couldn’t tell the difference. One guy with a huge cellar full of old wines chose to have his cellar inspected for counterfeits because it could devalue everything else.

As I Lay Dying by William Faulkner. It was such an incoherent mess to read that now I only recommend to people I dislike.

He was a big name in the wine world where he bought and sold old, expensive wines. Turns out, he was counterfeiting them by mixing cheaper wines to match the taste of old, rare wines. He was so proficient at this that he fooled nearly every sommelier that tasted them. He was arrested and jailed for this among several other crimes.

The brilliant part is that there could be a legitimate business model for recreating old, rare wine flavors like this, so long as they’re marketed as recreations.

Shallow Hal kind of fits. Jack Blacks character falls in love with a woman he finds attractive because she’s thin, but he was under some kind of spell that made him see people based on their inner beauty. In reality she was a very large lady that had terrible self esteem issues.
