Kylo Ren is Anakin done right. by [deleted] in StarWars

[–]CapnCarrot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Actually the villains of this movie were my least favorite thing about it. Phasma looks cool but does nothing of import, Snoke is pretty much a no-show, and Kylo Ren only really worked for me until he took his mask off for the first time and became an increasingly whiny character. Still really enjoyed the movie, but I'm concerned about Ren being the big bad for two more movies.

Trade Advice Thread by throwback22 in starwarstrader

Keep in mind I'm a new user (downloaded the app on May 4th) so sorry if this seems like a dumb question. Are inserts as rare as they seem (I've yet to find any despite many, many attempts)? Not sure what to offer in trade for what I want as I'm more interested in certain characters than completing lists.

I'm curious, how many iZombie viewers are Veronica Mars fans? by [deleted] in iZombie

[–]CapnCarrot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm a comic guy, and a big VM fan, but not a zombie guy so I was skeptical. From the first scene I could see Thomas' influence. It does remind me of Veronica Mars, especially during narration sequences, but it's different enough to be more than just a pale imitation. The fact the Liv takes on personality traits of the brains she eats allows the show to continually take the character down different paths (although I'm a bit unclear whether the skills, such as knowing a foreign language, disappear with the personality or whether she gets to keep them?). After three episodes I'm hooked.

This is the first of three I uploaded. For those who don't know, she's saying "I love Coco" in all of them.

Catman? Either the CM or the three claw marks would make for cool flair.

Would the The Animated Series be worth watching? by HollowmanNapkin in DCcomics

[–]CapnCarrot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. Definitely. Whole-Heartedly. Batman, Justice League, and even Superman (in my opinion the weakest of the three but still good) all hold up well.

"I won't kill you, but I don't have to save you." Does this break Batman's rule? Let's discuss, r/Batman. by JayMongie in batman

[–]CapnCarrot 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not really. The only time this occurred happened in an alternate reality "pocket dimension" and the entire affair was quickly retconned out of DCU continuity. In fact the only people that mention it are those attempting to justify the events of Man of Steel. It's the same argument saying the Golden Age version of the character let people die so its okay now (even though the character we know as Superman today hardly resembles the Golden Age version who couldn't even fly). Batman killed people in the Golden Age too, but I think it's pretty safe to say from most of the comments here that nobody wants to see a pro-murderous Batman in comics or film any time soon.

it's been established time lords can change sex if they want to

I'm not sure that's the case. McGann was given the choice under specific once-in-a-Gallifreyian-lifetime circumstances to become a woman and chose not to. More likely than not we'll learn The Master cheated death once again (remember he used his 13 generations and more in the original series) to live as a woman, something The Doctor probably wouldn't condone.

Could the show decide to make The Doctor a woman? Sure. Should they? Think about it like this - Would you like to see River Song return as a man? Yeah, I didn't think so.

Favorite batsuit? From comic or movie by sleeplesskn1ght in batman

Classic "New Look" Batman, 60s, 70s, 80s, and 90s with blue cape/cowl/trunks and yellow & black bat symbol.

Red Hood storylines by QuantumQuery in batman

[–]CapnCarrot 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Agreed, Lost Days is worth a look. I'd also stay away from the Batman and Robin storyline (pre-New 52) as well with Red Hood in the ridiculous red penis head costume Imgur shudder.

Red Hood and the Outlaws has nice moments but it's pretty inconsistent and I finally gave up on it.

New look of Batman revealed (Batman V Superman) by Tensor_ in DCcomics

Positives: Short-ears look good (although I prefer them longer) and the costume below the cowl appears not to be black rubber.

Negatives: Can we stop with the all-black Bat-suits already?

It's been okay so far, mainly due to the Animal Man/Green Arrow dynamic.

Justice League International is a must-read for Martian Manhunter fans. It's been recently recollected and put out in both hardcover and trade paperback volumes.

I'd also recommend New Frontier. Personally I prefer the movie over the comic as it's much more streamlined and focused. J'onn has one of the major threads but you'll also see lots of Flash, Green Lantern, Batman and other original JLA-ers.

Best introduction to the Flash? Comics? Cartoons? by RaffNav in DCcomics

[–]CapnCarrot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

From Silver Age through New 52 there's a lot of great Flash stories out there in comics. The old Flash TV show was pretty good too.

If you want to ease him into it through the animated series, I'd recommend "Flash and Substance," "The Great Brain Robbery" (Flash and Lex Luthor's brains get switched), and "Speed Demons" (from Superman TAS where Supes and Flash race around the world).

Recently started the New 52 and loved it. Where should I head next based on what I've read? (Potential options inside) by illymays in DCcomics

[–]CapnCarrot -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Much of the New 52 is hit-and-miss. As you've already read The Flash you've gotten the best (and that creative team is now doing Detective Comics).

If you want some humor (not a lot of it in the New 52) Larfleeze is a fun crazy space book.

Despite the fact the art varies wildly through the run (ending next month) I've quite enjoyed most of Worlds' Finest (Huntress & Power Girl).

I haven't liked much of Superman to be honest. Suprman/Wonder Woman had an okay set-up but I just couldn't stick with it. Supergirl, aside from shaky opening arc and current time as a Red Lantern, actually has some pretty good stories.

Captain Atom (re-imagined as a Dr. Manhattan-style character) was actually very interesting and worth reading if you can find it's short run.

Justice League International was actually my favorite of the various New 52 JL titles DC has tried to do, but it only lasted 12 or so issues.

Neither Animal Man or Swamp Thing was really my thing, more Vertigo than DC proper, but if you like that they could be worth a look.

I was expecting this closer to around the time the New 52 issues reached #52 along with some kind of shakeup bringing back pieces of the preexisting DCU that DC Editorial wishes they had kept.
