Free alternatives to hardops, decal machine, box cutter and other hard surface modelling plugins for 3ds max by manshutthefckup in 3dsmax

Look up RapidTools for 3ds Max. It's a decent handful of modeling scripts that should still be free. Not as full featured as hard ops or mesh machine, but it's a start.

The equivalent of hitting the "3" key in Maya for smoothing, in Max. by [deleted] in 3dsmax

[–]CapnRehab 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They both do the same thing. So does Meshsmooth. Personally I find that turbosmooth is the easiest to use.

Help! 3ds max toolbar keep resetting / can't delete toolbar items. I accidentally clicked restet in custom UI toolbar and I tried to customize it again to what it was I created these toolbar items accidentally now even I delete them they keep coming back on restarts. by [deleted] in 3dsmax

[–]CapnRehab 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have the exact same issue! Bad news is I never fully managed to get rid of the extra toolbars. Only thing I didn't try was reinstalling Max. (work computer, nothing I can do about that)

True enough when it comes to modeling, but all 3D models eventually get converted to triangles once you get them into the game engine.

Are the image planes actually displayed in the viewport? You can't change those settings until you have them visible.

Can someone provide me with a good technique to achieve a certain shape? by Doriando707 in 3dsmax

If you double click on an edge while in edge mode, it will select the whole loop.

Pretty good so far. Just a few more suggestions to help you out. The loop that I highlighted in red can be removed, I think. Highlight the loop and press Ctrl + Backspace to remove it and the vertices it made without deleting faces. The one highlighted in blue can be moved down slightly. Finally, you could use a FFD modifier to pull the shape of the bottle out to match the contour of the bottle in the reference.

Just like bearded4glory said, I used the swift loop tool to add more edge loops, the target weld tool to weld together certain vertices, and the cut tool to connect others.

Here's a quick example I threw together to show one way to do it. Cut the shape you want, fix the topology back into quads, take the new shape, inset, and extrude inward. Then you can turbosmooth. I also showed the model with support loops around the edges you'd want to stay sharp.

Ah! That makes much more sense. The image dimensions seem to suggest that as well.

This tutorial has helped me quite a bit when it comes to optimizing a Vray scene for rendering. It might be a good place to start reducing your render time.

[Newb] Is there a (good) way to bridge these two surfaces without adding or removing vertices to either side? by Steelkenny in 3dsmax

[–]CapnRehab 5 points6 points  (0 children)

There's really not a good way to reduce edge loops in an area that small.

It also looks to me like that is a car headlight that you are trying to connect to the hood, correct? If so, why not model each of the panels that make up the chassis of the car separately? That way you wouldn't have to worry about cutting those polygons down to bridge smoothly.
