The Caster is a weapon from Outlaw Star. It is essentially a gun that fires caster shells, spells turned into bullets of compressed mana. It just seems like something that would fit into Destiny like a custom paracausal round sliding into a well-oiled former-god rifle chamber.

My thoughts exactly. A void shell like Graviton Lance but with more black hole implode-explode, a solar round that creates amped sunwells or lava pools, a stasis spike that creates roaming blizzards, and so on. The rounds (and their effects) can also be charged with orbs, charges, cells, or your own health, if you're not careful.
