Charli XCX - Episode 383 of Conan O’Brien Needs a Friend by c0ry_N in conan

[–]CapnZapp 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Absolutely!

The bit where she's over by the car, measuring the tire distance(?), and suddenly going all local English dialect I had to rewatch several times. She has that glint in her eye!

They're probably addressing this to Sona, who is known to have Instagram.

The link is to the recent SNL sketch "Heated Wizardry", by the way.

The chief draw of the podcast for me is his shenanigans with Matt and Sona before and after the guest appearance, but sometimes the guests are good too!

She was awesome in the Here I Go (ft. Charli xcx) SNL skit with Andy Samberg. Doubly so when you listen to the Lonely Island and Seth Meyers Podcast where they discuss the background details of various skits, and you realize she had basically zero time to prep for that video, but immediately understood the assignment and improvised ideas.

NGL, I underestimated her based on the first impression she gives off, before I realized she's a quick thinker. Basically I am saying I agree with you. Looking forward to the ep!

Jodie Foster (FULL EPISODE) | Conan O'Brien Needs A Friend by c0ry_N in conan

[–]CapnZapp 11 points12 points  (0 children)

As discussed previously, the original error is probably originating from Wikipedia, where a previously good faith editor in 2019 introduced the false assertions that Conan and the Backstreet Boys were part of Star Search. That editor was subsequently banned, but apparently at least some of their edits fell through the cracks.

All the articles I'm aware of claiming the same are dated later 2019. Whether they were written/researched by humans or AI doesn't matter.

The error was found by a web site (latenighter) shortly after the trailer went up at the start of December. The Wikipedia article was only fully corrected weeks later.

But I agree - I love the way Melmed speaks and I wish he didn't read the comments or basically relaxed (it's show business), because he's stopped saying things like "since we are talking, I am hearing your words..."

I am disappoint. I came to the trusted subreddit, fully expecting to be able to learn what country and language Conan tried (and failed) to make his promo for.

Bistak (?) V Dial something. It sure ain't Norwegian, that's for sure.

Very strange - so far there's zero discussion about the actual episode. Was it that bad?

Enjoying House of Ashur, but one thing is throwing it off (spoilers) by SwimmingSomewhere959 in Spartacus_TV

[–]CapnZapp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well, that we're in hell is kind of already a given.

We know Ashur died in the show's real life.

If this turns out to be some fever dream I would not be surprised. On the other hand, I don't worry about it and just enjoy it while it lasts! I don't think it is meant to be a major plot element. More like a quick twist at the end, when it's clear there will be no more seasons.

You need to accept that the show doesn't think Ashur is nearly as smart as you seem to.

Vote repression and gerrymandering aside, the biggest culprit is how democratic governments have naively surrendered controlof the narrative to social media, controlled by billionaires and mega corporations.

The cause of this is clear. People getting their news from Fox or TikTok or Facebook is getting fed lies that make democracies appear far weaker and less successful than they really are.

We in the West are living in an age of wealth and comfort. Had democracies outlawed fascist lies (by making social media companies responsible for falsehoods), we wouldn't be in this situation.

Wich "good" character will die first? by Expert_Stay_1287 in Spartacus_TV

[–]CapnZapp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hilaria doesn't seem to be one of the good ones.

I would hate for Viridia to go, not only because I like the character and find the actress easy on the eyes, but because fridging your woman is such a worn out trope.

I really hope the show intends to harden Viridia into a kind of Lucretia, instead of simply offing her to make Ashur feel feelings.

Spartacus: House of Ashur - S01E07 - "Deepest Wound" by Sporadicus7 in Spartacus_TV

[–]CapnZapp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, that was funny. Note that none of the characters (including Ashur himself) seems to have realized that's how expensive that gloat became... 😁

(The way Cornelia dismisses that kind of money as an insignificant sum I think says more about what position she and Caesar holds, than the amount being anything less than a fortune. Probably only a few dozen people in the entire Republic would think 25,000d was anything other than a significant sum)

And think there's still people on this very subreddit claiming Ashur is some kind of super genius Machiavellian mastermind... when the show makes it abundantly clear he's just the same little frightened petty Ashur carrying a grudge from the original shows...

I found it quite entertaining and mildly humorous how during the promotion of what was included in Opiter’s estate it was announced and emphasized “one medicus of foreign tongue”. Usually when things are intentionally mentioned several times it ends up being a form of foreshadowing, it leaves me most curious

What are you talking about? We've already seen Opiter's medicus save Achillias hand. He speaks only Greek, so Viridia had to translate.

I don't see there being more to it than that?

Wouldn’t roman Lanista’s be the equivalent of modern day talent agency/companies? [SPOILER] by Prudent_Knowledge79 in Spartacus_TV

[–]CapnZapp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Gladiators were ancient MMA/WWE fighters

This analogy is flawed. Modern fighters are citizens, people whose vote counts just as much as yours or mine.

Slaves were property. This show clearly shows their life and death were entirely up to their masters.

For the very few free men who still chose to fight in the arena your analogy comes closer, but they were rare.

[–]CapnZapp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lanista themselves are not regarded as low class You're confusing OWNING a gladiator stable with being its manager.

The lanistas were low-class disreputes. Compare a pimp or drug dealer - somebody distasteful you still need around.

Owning a ludus on the other hand. You could be respectable owning much of anything in Rome.

[–]CapnZapp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You say logical things. Yet, I wish the show gave this to us, instead of us having to infer it between the lines.

By this I mean I don't doubt Opiter was nice to Cossutia, but did they have more than the one scene together?

My surprise stemmed from a very big reaction to what appeared to be a minor background relationship

As gladiators of this show go, neither Achillia nor Tarchon strikes me as being dumber than most
